SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR The Printers* Strike* HE strike of the printers of the country to obtain an eight hour day has reached Minnesota and the contest is now on in the larger cities, the country being little affect beyond the fact that a good many non-union printers are being drawn from the coun try to supply the places of the strikers. Erery big printing establishment in the large cities is affected. The union printers demand eight hours as a day in stead of nine with the same pay as at prssent. If they win this means that it will cost every printing establishment in the state one ninth more to do their work, one ninth more for wages, one ninth ^more for interest on the millions of dollars invested in costly plants, on ninth more for the general cost of doing business. If the printers win the employers will at first suffer this loss but in the end the peo ple will have to pay it just as in end they have to pay the cost of every product no matter what it may be. The eight hour day will prob ably in the end prevail, though possibly not as a result of the present strike, but the conten tion of the employers for an open shop will also probably be made good. THERE 225 are few hnesx of busi ness in which competition is so keen and the field is so over crowded as the newspaper busi ness. Because of this fact with in the past few months the St. Paul Globe and the Minneapolis Times haye been forced to suspend publication after a* total loss of over a million dollars. In Crookston two dailies are strug gling for existence where but one can make money the other one has already sunk over $60,- 000. In Bemidji three weeklies and one daily occupy a field where there is barely room for one daily and two weeklies and yet another weekly is being launched. It is no wonder that the poverty of the newspaper man is a by-word the world over. How much interest do you show the teacher you have hired to teach your children in that work? If you are not interested in the matter, how much interest can you reasonably expect her to manifest? Lieutenant General Adna R. Chaffee and Brigadier General James F. Cro zier were entertained at luncheon by T*QrjL Mayor Pound of London. Cold It should be borne in mind that every cold weakens the lungs, low ers the vitality and prepares the system for the more serious dis eases, among which are the two greatest destroyers of human life, pneumonia and consumption. Chamberlain's Cough Remedy has won its great popularity by its prompt cures of this most common ailment. It aids expectoration, re lieves the lungs and opens the secretions, effecting a speedy and permanent cure. It counteracts any tendency toward pneumonia. Price 25c. Large Size 50c. The Yellowstone Valley, The Yellowstone Valley, near Billings is just now coming into special prominence on account of its different irrigation canals. The Billings canal, east of that town, waters an extremely fertile district, in which alfalfa is a very prolific crop. East of Huntly, on the Crow Indian reservation, which will probably be opened in 1906, various canals are planned by the United States government, which will water a large tract of this very fertile country. Plans are beins: matured for the erec tion of a large beet sugar factory at Billings, which will add to the prosperity of this part of the Yellowstone valley.
