If there is anything in a name, he can't be stopped, anyway. Governor Johnson's plurality, now that all the returns are ir, has been found to be 72,366. Not as large as it might have been if the republicans had not put up a candidate but it will do. If each householder would sprinkle a little ashes or sand on the sidewalk front of his house, it would not be a great deal of work for anyone, and it would improve walkiDg 100 per cent. Get your Christmas shopping done early. It is the people who wait until the last day or two that have to do the worrying. By taking time by the forelock, you get all the fun and miss all the annoyance. The Granite Falls Tribune speaks of Congressman Mc Cleary as Jim McCleary. What temerity. Jim Hill, Jim Tawney, Jim Martin and several other Jims are familiar enough names but to "Jim" Professor James T. McCleary is something unheard before. Whether Judge Pendergast is rewarded for his services in the cause of Governor Johnson this fall, or not, he is deserving of something good. The governor could not make a move that would be better received up in this country than to appoint his run ning mate in the late campaign to one of the best offices under his control. The House will make uo mis take if it should pick Archie Vernon for chief clerk. Archie is a bright young man, and is one of the best, as well as one of the best known, newspaper men in the twin cities. For three ses sions he "covered" the House for the Pioneer Press, and he knows all the ins and outs of the legis lative game. He ought to get the job. The death of Samuel Spencer, president of the Southern Bail way system, in a rear-end col lision on his own road, is an awful thing, of course but there are elements of poetic justice about it. After all, the killing of the president of a road is no worse than the killing of others in the hundreds of wrecks every year, which make railroad travel in the United States a daily horror. We imagine The Valley View (East Grand Forks) "swiped" the following. If it didn't, we most humbly beg pardon. Anyway it is good. Who weeps with you when you are sad, and laughs with you when you are glad, and smiles at you when you are madthe editor. Who has to be both kind and wise and never (hardly ever) lies, and when he does creates surprisethe editor. Who owns a heart as well as cheek, pos sessed of spirit proud yet meek and lives on forty cents a week the editor.. Thief River Falls News: J. J. Opsahl, who was elected to rep resent the people of this legis lative district in the House, wishes the News to state that he is desirous of supporting such measures in the state legislature as are wanted by the people of this district, and with that end in view desires to have any parties interested in any partic ular legislation to write to him and express their views upon the matter. Mr. Opsahl desires to remain close to the people and we believe he is going to make a very creditable representative, ti *}&,* The gifted man Is he who Bees the essential point and leaves all the rest aside as surplusage.Carlyle.
