THIS IS MY 81ST BIRTHDAY. Amelia E. Barr. Mrs. Amelia E. Barr, the popular novelist, was born in Lancashire, England, March 29, 1831. Her maid en name was Huddleston. In Iher eighteenth year she married Robert Barr, a young Scotch clergyman, and together they came out to America. The couple located in Galveston, Tex as, where Mr. Barr soon after fell a victim to the yellow fever. With three small children to support the widow made her way to New York, where she found employment as a hack writer on the New York Ledg er, then at the height of its success. Mrs. Barr continued work as a mis cellaneous writer for some fifteen years, and not until she was consid erably past middle age did she write her first novel, "Jan Vedder's Wife," during a period of confinement in her room with a broken ankle. -'The Sow of Orange Ribbon" followed within the year, and 'her success as a writer of sentimental historical novels was assured. Since that time more than half a hundred popular novels ha\e come irom her pen Congratulations to Elihu Thomson, noted electncal in-1 ventoi, htty-nine years old today Cy' Young, the oldest of profes sional baseball players, torty-hve years old today John Works, United States Sen atoi irom California, 65 jears old to day Cardinal Gotti, one of thf most eminent mpmbers of the Sacred col lege, seventy-eight years old todaj. The Senate may have given Sena tor Stephenson a clean bill ot health but it will take more than that to convince the people that the $100,- 000 spent ill the primaries was not corruptly used. He and Lorimer make a pretty pair. The Stinger Stung. Concerning the story of Amund sen's story of the discovery of the south pole which was published in the Pioneer nearly a week before that ot an other Beltrami county paper, the following is quoted from the Bemid3i Sentinel- "The Sentinel had been assured of its exclusive right here and for that reason the following from Corwin D. Tilbury, St. Paul managei of the American Press Association may be of interest to our readers:'Regarding the Amundsen story, I assure you that the Pioneer did not get that ser vice from us. When we sent out our notice, we believed that we had the exclusive right to use this service, but somehow the trust got hold of it. We received an order from the aitdyj:" "V? **M*fi|N mwaeTBrw "ew"' tmmmm Pioneer for this feature but declined to ship the plates.' This would apparently indicate that the Pioneer was not able to get service that other papers can. But the facts of the case are as follows: The American Press and Western Newspaper services both offered the Amundsen story to the Pioneer by the same mail. The Pioneer bought from the Western Newspaper Union. Had the Pioneer been as anxious to monopolize this story as Wilson ap peared to be, it would have bought both plates, thereby shutting out all other papers in this territory but as it could only use one set of plates, it did not care to adopt dog in the manger tactics. Under date of March 28, the fol lowing letter was received by the Pioneer from Mr. Tilbury:" "In reply to your letter of the 23d, about the Amundsen story. I was mistaken when I told Wilson that you had ordered that feature. I shall explain to him as well as to you. Wilson ordered the Farm Architectural Page and afterwards you ordered it. I told you about that. Wilson wrote me saying that he thought he had exclusive right for the Amundsen story but that you had also received it and wanted an explanation. Now, I had in my mind when I dictated that letter that you had ordered the page but I was mis taken as it was the Farm page that we could not supply to you because his order was in first. We do not duplicate matter, you know, so of course must decline to fill a second order for the same matter which is a frequent occurance. Instead of de clining to supply the Pioneer, we would be only to glad to be favored with its orders. Trusting that this explanation is satisfactory and re greetting the incident, I am, Very truly yours, C. D. Tilbury. Honest medicinemade to make you well and happy.
