It is proposed to appoint a com mission to investigate the adminis tration of the state of Minnesota with the view of recommending changes which will reduce the overhead cost of government. A wise provision states that the commission is not to get any salary unless one is granted by the 1915 legislature to which tke commission must report. They Persist in It. The twin city reports of action by the senate committee on temperance include Bemidji with Moorhead and East Grand Forks as opposing the Nelson bill. In spite of the fact that letters from Bemidji have fairly poured in on our representative and senator protesting against the Mc Donald statements as standing for the actual sentiment in Bemidji, the twin city press persists in assuming his statements as true. Bemidji fav ored the Nelson bill hut believes that the one now recommended by the committee is betetr since it provides for a graded reduction. Bemidji is strongly in favor of the one to 500 saloon ratio. Minneapolis and the Country. Last week the Minneapolis Journal took exception to the statement in the Duluth News-Tribune that Du luth should be considered as one of the country districts and not aligned with the twin cities. The..Journal stated that while DuluuT might be looking forward to the time when it shall be the center of a farming community, the twin cities have al ready arrived. The Journal further said: ''Suc- cessful agriculture is the foundation on which Minneapolis is built is it not time that we in Min nesota began to figure on doing the most for the state, instead of merely gz-abbing for local advantage? What we need above all things is a real Minnesota spirit and with it a breadth of vision that will enable us to see beyond city limits and county boundaries. The fact is that city and country are interdependent. Each has its share of progress and neither could do without the other." The Pioneer agrees with the Journ al in every one of the above sen^ fences. But if the Journal represents the sentiment of Minneapolis, how does it account for the fact that Min neapolis is giving this year $30,000 for better farming in North Dakota and not one cent for development work of the Northern Minnesota De velopment association. Last year Min neapolis, came in with $'?,50/0, of which $1,000 came from one rail road, as against the $30,000^ put into North Dakota. ,,i Outside of the logging, contractors) the Minneapolis wholesalers are getr ting the bulk of the trade from Northern Minnesota. With, the build ing up of this vast, empire they will get more business. The immigration rooms of the association are located in Minneapolis. Can Minneapolis af ford to have the work of the asso ciation crippled and' the offices re moved from that city because it can not see fit to put in the $4,000 asked by Northern Minnesota? The Journal willdo well and give 'foundation to the statements quoted above if it will make Minneapolis see th&,necessity of aiding, the develop meat K)f.
