mngttM SATURDAY. OCTOBER 27. 1917. "INTOLERENCE", HUGE FILM SPECTACLE AT THE REX TWO DAYS The most colossal film production in the annals of the motion picture world is booked for the Rex next Thursday and Friday, it being "In- tolerance," the stupendous spectacle directed by D. W. Griffith, who pro duced the "Birth of a Nation" which created such a sensation throughout the country. "Intolerance" is the most gigantic picture ever filmed, requiring 13 reels to depict. It will be impossi ble to give more than two showings each day, matinee and one in the evening. With the picture will be an expert pianist who will play the musical score, and a special director will also be here to stage the film, likewise a special machine operator. The picture will come to Bemidji after its marvelous run in New York, London, Sydney, Australia and in Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and other American cities where it has created a furore and made a deeper impression than Mr. Griffith's other sensational success "The Birth of a Nation." In the annals of the modern stage "Intolerance" becomes pre-eminent because of its daring, its bigness and its creation of a new art from which links the beauties of music, litera ture, drama and painting and rolls tehm all into one mighty spectacle that will not soon be equalled. It assembles a horde of over i25,000 people, 7,000 horses, 1,500 chariots and war engines and instruments of four ages in the growth of the world. It is a romance and a revelation. It depicts the age old struggle of love for supremacy over greed and intol erance and n&rrojKne.ss but above all else it stirs the heart and the im agination and it fans alive the finest impulses that can find lodgment in the human system. a It is given upon a scale of gran deur never thought possible up to its advent. There are 5,000 marvelous scenes in four great periods of the world's development. JOY FOR THE MEN AT TEA Some Good Samaritan Has Invented Oval Saucer That Safely Holds Cup and Dainties. Any man who knows that, sooner or later, he must go to another afternoon tea cannot but rejoice at the recent in vention of an oval, platterlike saucer, large enough to hold with ease a cup, a lettuce or other sandwich, and a dainty trifle of pastry. The thing was needed, the modesty of the anonymous inventorevidently not Mr. Edison reveals him one of the large body of occasional and unwilling tea-goers. We, the reluctant and unwilling, are all strangely alike at these functions and we have all been embarrassed by the old-fashioned saucer. Circular in shape, and bard&j' larger than .the. cup that jjjejies its reputation and dances druhkeniy whenever another guest joggles our elbow (which happens so often that we suspect conspiracy), the old-fashioned saucer affords no reason ably secure perch for a sandwich re sponds with instant delight to the law of gravitation if left to itself and sets us wishing, those of us who think sci entifically, that evolution had refrained from doing away with an extension by which alone we could now hope to manage it. We mean a tail! If after noon teas had been started in the Oli gocene epoch instead of the seven teenth century, we are convinced that evolution, far from discarding this use ful appendage, would have perfected it. A little hand would have evolved at the end of it, such a little hand as might hold his saucer while a gentle man sips from his teacup.Atlantic Magazine. WHERE "PEP" WAS NEEDED Secretary Daniels, Discussing Effi ciency, Relates Story of Girl's Ad vising Beau to Kiss Old Mare. Secretary of the Navy Daniels is a firm believer in speeding up. Effi ciency is the watchword of his depart ment. A big navy can't be built fast enough for him. And he was discuss ing efficiency and high speed. He wants to cut out red tape. "Discussion is well and good," said Secretary Daniels, "but the main ques tion is whether it is idle talk or not. Is it practical or is it foolish? Is it like Torkins and his girl? "Torkins, by the way, was out with Ms girl during the days before the au tomobile, when a young man who wanted to be popular would call on his girl with a horse and buggy to take her for a drive. You know, the faster the horse the better the impression. "Torkins, on his first call, took the girl for a long drive, and when they found themselves in the midst of a country road, he ventured for a kiss. "'A kiss?' asked the girl. 'What good would a kiss do?' 'Oh,' replied the embarrassed youth, 'it would make me feel gay and lively.' "'Well, Charley,' the cold-blooded, unemotional damsel retorted, 'if it is as you say, and we expect to get any where before it's time to return home, you'd better get out and kiss the old mare once!'"
