Subscribe for Tne Daily Pioneer OUR CAPTUKkD FLAUS ABROAD Emblems Taken During the War of 1812 Arc Safely Preserved in London. A recent walk through Chelsea brought me to several places of inter est to Americans. Firstly, the old Roy al hospital, built in the reign of King Charles II. the great hall of which is now used as a recreation room for th4 old pensioners and from whose walls a number of flags captured dur ing the 1812-1815 war are suspended. The colors hang sedately side by side with Napoleonic eagles and other war trophies, and if it were not for the records it would be almost im possible to discern their story. Among them are flags of the Sixty-eighth and Elghtv-nfth regiments captured at Blandensberg the Kentucky regimen tal flag, the Fourth regiment of United States infantry, taken at Detroit the Second regiment of the United States Infantry and another.taken at Queens town Heights. I wonder how many Americans know of their existence. It would cer tainly be a graceful act of the British government to return them to Amer ica. No doubt the American author ities have some similar trophies which thev would be pleased to exchange London Landmark. ONCE HAD FINGERS AND TOES Animals Started Out With Ten Digits Environment HasCaused Change, ScientittsfSay. Scientists say that all animals started out with tet} '.j|ngers and ten toes, and that environment has caused a great change in both the ends of the limbs and the limbs themselves. The fingers were orig inally the toes of the fore legs. The horse, for instance, has developed, into a oneftoe, or one-finger animal, and the cow into a two-toe animal. The hen^has three toes and part of another on each foo^. History shows thsB&he horse once had fi\e toes on each foot- The same is true of the also of the hen, scientists say. Something happened to cause Vjthe change, for the rale of five fingers and five tees his bepu universal. If you examine a chicken a shell you can see dis tinctly five tots on each foot, and there are live little" points on the *nd of each wing, which might de velop into fingers, under other con ditions. Some of the new-born ch'ck's toes do not develop. iihcribe~ror~The-PT5neer. COME TO HAYDEN'S AND BALDWIN'S BI AUCTION LIVE STOC SALE Thursday, Oct. 30th, 19 Commencing at 1:30 P. M.
