How much these investigations cost has not been reckoned but it is estimated they will form a consider able part at congressional expenses -which run about $25,000 a day. This Congress is also breaking the previous record for bills and resolu tions Introduced, having 18,777 to its lit with only half ot ita^ime gone. ^pYevloua congress23.8 in itsin years, piled upH hftuaeFand4senate hoppers.. 7 Agree TJnon entire the Out of 200 resolutions offered in -both houses of ibis congress propos ing investigaiibns of various kinds, 77 have been agreed upon. Scores of resolutions have (been introduced and many adopted for investigation of almost every ex ecutive department and prominent administration official. Scarcely any local disturbance of consequence in any quarter of the country escapes having a resolution of investigation introduced. Forest fires in Minnesota, race riots in southern cities, the coal and steel strikes all prompted sesolu tions. Many Subjects Covered. The list of subjects covered by resolution offered in this congress in eludes: substitutes for railroad cross ties, coal prices, socialistic activities in. the Federal Trade Commission, su gar profiteering, propaganda to in fluence railroad legislation, troops in Russia, peace treaty leak, Mexican af fairs, activities of soviet agents in the United States, merchant marine ques tions, garden, city and suburb im provement in Europe, transportation problems in the Southwest, supply of cars for agricultural products, suspen sion of a Washington school teacher, high cost of living, methods by which army officers secured "home duty" as signments during the war, income tax dodging, publicity bureaus of govern ment departments, influenza, malaria, and conditions in the Virgin Islands Congress has conducted hearings on practically every question of na tional interect including the conduct of the war, shipping, railroads reorg anization, the meat packing industry, food prices, and radical propaganda "Who Wrote It?" When Demetra Vaka, author of Haremllk" and "In the Shadow of Islam," first came to America she was governess for a year to the two little grandsons of J. Fenimore Cooper. The children had been brought up with the utmost reverence for their famous grandfather, and had uncon adoosly imbibed the belief that all the world's best literature was the off spring of his pen. Something was said In the elder tpys hearing one day about one of the books of the Bible, with some refer ence to its authorship, and the boy looked up at his governess with a startled face. "Who wrote the Bible?" he demand ed, as one whose first faith has been shaken. Demetra Vaka explained as best as she could about the various books, and the boy sighed, still a bit incredulous. "I aways thought," be said slowly, "that grandfather wrote it." Needless Labor. "John,-* said the nervous woman, "I thlnfc tfeore !s a burglar in the house?" "Nonsense i Why should a preda tory person take the trooole to break into a dwelling when be can walk around a few blocks and gather up gallons of priceless milk?" His Regular Fee.
