'Room in London Where Rudyard
Kipling, Thirty Year* Ago, Wrote
"The Light That Failed."
I Thirty years make few changes in a
London street, and Vllliers street run
ning down to the Thames past the
smoke-smudged walls of Charing
Cross railway station is much the
same as when Rndyard Kipling-lived
in Number.19, the Embankment cham
bers, and struggled for recognition
'from the London editors, says Arthur
Bartiett Maurice in "Literary Pilgrim
ages" In the New York Herald.
The third-floor rooms in the Em
bankment "chambers where Kipling
worked in his early twenties are the
scene of nearly all the stories with a
London background that he has writ
ten.
"For example. 'The Light That
Failed.' The rooms shared by Tor
peahow and Dick Heldar were Kip
ling's own rooms. From the doorway
of No. 19 poor. Dick stricken with
blindness, groped down to the water's
edge for the sense of the Thames'
damp and the feel of the ships that
wafted to his nostrils the pungent
smells of the East. Lying across that
1 doorway, Torpenhow first found
Bessie Broke, the little street girl
ifrom 'sooth ,'o the river,' who fell in
love with him, and revenged herself
on Dick for his interference by scrap
ing away the face of the Melancholia.
On a table of the Kipling rooms in
the Embankment chambers, Charlie
Mears, of 'The Finest Story in the
i World,' scrawled the words, meaning
less to him, that told of the agony of
the galley slave. The very table once
i had being. Kipling bad been burning
the midnight oil and generally over
working himself. On the table he had
graved the words: 'Oft was I weary
iwhen I toiled at thee'the motto
which the galley slave carved upon
'his oar."

Frigate Bird's Endurance.
For pure and unadulterated impu
dence,1
lack of principle und of all
virtue, the frigate bird Us pre-eminent.
These birds must be eudowed with
prodigious powers of flight. They are
often seen hundreds of miles from
land, appearing as mere specks in the
sky.
After hovering almost motionless for
a considerable time they take flight in
ever-Increasing circles in the direction
of their island homes, which have of
necessity to be reached ere the set
ting of the sun, unless the faculty of
sleeping on the wing is possessed by
them.
I have never met or heard of a rann
who has seen the frigate bird rest on
the waters of the ocean over which it
delights to wander.
Next to the albatross, I enter the
frigate bird for the aeronautic endur
ance stakes.Buffalo Express.
Sugar Fungus.
It Is reported that an expert of the
department of Agriculture has dis
covered that the spoiling of granu
lated Sugar, stored in damp places, re
sults from the development of a mi
croscopic fungus, seen in the form of
threads and round bodies, and cap
able of being artificially cultivated,
so that experiments can be made In
inoculating sugar previously free
from the growth. Thr"ee species of
this fungus were found in some bar
rels of sugar which had become unfit
for use. It grows readily on all kinds
of cooked vegetables, but chiefly on
raw vegetables-
Key Chain That Stretches.
There are times when the user of a
key ring and chain wishes the chain
were longer. With one such as this,
those wishes will come true, for the
chain is made of coiled piano wive and
will stretch a considerable distance.

TAKE DELIGHT IN MANIKINS
Venetian Children Prefer Antics* of
Marionettes to Any Moving
Picture Show.
Fashions in entertainments "never
change among patrons of the resource
ful Tony Surg in New York, nor yet
on the shores of the Adriatic, home
land of the marionettes. The Vene
tian child wouldn't give ptn. for mo
vies while he has the belcwed jagnt
ed manikins of his ancestors to ex
ecute their wonderful maneuvers and
spout the speeches of Romeo and Ju
liet or one of JHans Christian Jinder
sen's fairy tales oi*yes, orsoine ex
citing episode in the detectiive' career
of Sherlock Holmes.
Thursday afternoon is the- triumphal
time of the marionette all over Italy,
for Thursday, not Saturday, is the
school holiday, and childhood^ dear
est delight is to witness the dcania of
the dolls, a New York writer states.
Venice has the best public perform
ance. The dolls are about four feet
high. Any necessary number of char
acters are plnced on the stage and
their entrances, exits and antics- are
managed by the man above, who-does
the wire pulling and who puts, the
speeches into their months. All sorts
of plays are givun, and the ordinary
type of Punch and Judy show is less
common than fairy tales and Shake
speare on children's afternoons.

MONAR CH
Malleable
Range
Down
If you expect to get the long satisfactory service
your neighbor is getting from her Monarch
Range, you have got to buy a MONARCH.
Don't think you can get Wiat /rind )of service
from a cheap range, built of ordinary materials.
That is impossible, because the Monarch stand
ard of service can only be had from a range
built of malleable ironthe Monarch way.
Ordinary ranges have always been offered for
sale in this city. But our people have come to
demand a malleable range.
The first Monarch Ranges sold here twenty
years ago established a new standard of serv
ice. The Monarch's reputation grew rapidly.
More Monarchs have been sold here than any
other make of range. And those first Monarchs
are still doing their work, proving that money
invested in a Monarch pays returns for long
years to come.
If you do not already understand why malleable
iron makes a better range, come in and let us
explain it to you. You can see why a Monarch
does quicker, better work, with lower fuel cost.
Everyone can afford a Monarch at the terms we
offer. In fact, only well-to-do people can af
ford to ignore the economy in cooking expense'
that immediately follows the installation of a
Monarch in your kitchen.
