A BIG GAME OF POKER.
A Foreign Minister Who Lost S300 000 in a
New York Millionaire'. House.
From the Detroit Free Press.'
A heavy game of poker was played
not very long since, as I am creditably
informed, in the mansion of a New
York millionaire. The miltionaire is
also a banker, whose name is pretty
well known from the Hudson to San
Francisco. 1 am not at liberty to put
it in Sprint and for this very good
reason I refrain from so doing. He
has long had the reputation ef one of
the boldest poker players in Xew
York and some of the heaviest games
on record have been played in his
house, where he dispenses a princely
hospitality. In the particular game in
question, "if my information is correct,
a foreign minister, who must also be
nameless, thouch I may say that he is
a social celebrity in "Washington and
not unknown in other places, found
Mm ?lf mulcted out of $300,000.
Me was well acquainted with the
baaker and had joined poker parties at
his house several times before. On the
occasion in question the party consist
ed of five, all with millions to draw
upon and courage to back a strong
hand for all it was worth. They hud
played for some timo before anything
unusual happened. The hands were
ordinary and there was nothing excit
ing in the game. Along toward mid
night, however, the cards took a sort
of new departure. The first deal gave
the banket the eight, nine, ten and jack
hearts. He discarded a spade, took one
card and drew the queen of hearts. So
strong a straight flush as that might
not come out twice in ten thousand
tiines. He was elated, but his face
gave no sign.
The minister called for two cards.
He already held three kings, and in the
draw he got a fourth. The prospect
for a contest was good four kings
against a straight flush, and the play
ers full of grit. The betting began
low. but soon got up to fifties, and the
other players, whose hand3 were not
of much account, then dropped out.
The banker raised the figures to $100.
The minister put up $100 and said: "I
raise you fdOO. The banker saw tlie
$500 and raised it $1,000. The war
then began in earnest. The bets ran
up to 15.000, $10,000. 620,000. The
men who had stopped out held their
breath. The two who stood in bad
their blood up and each felt that his
hand was good enough for one figure.
In a few minutes the pot represented
$500,000. At that point the banker
showed a disposition to halt, but the
minister was not satisfied. He raised
another $20,000 and the banker saw it
and went $10,000 better. The Minis
ter followed with $25.000. "All right,"
said the banker, "I see your $25,000 and
call your hand. That was the end of
it. When the Minister laid down his
four kings, the banker put his straight
flush beside them withont a word.
The Minister seemed a little surprised,
but merely said, "Very good: the mon
ey is vours." He had lost $300,000,but
it did not sour him a bit. The game
was not resumed, but he talked as
pleasantly as if he had won a fortune
instead of losing one. The banker
seemed embarrossed and his friends
who had dropped out of the game were
uncomfortable. He decided on the spot
that it would not do to have any more
poker playing in his house. It might
be said that he drew his friends there
to fleece them. He still plays a first
rame now and then, but only at the
club.

A Word to the Girls.
Don't rush into matrimony, my dear
young ladies ; enjoy your youth while
you can. Don't allow any idea of mar
riage to get into your head. Don't
even run the risk of it by permitting
anv vounsr man to get so far as the
prooosinsr point. Fight him off and
make him wait or go away to some
body who is ready. Don't live under
the impression that you must accept
the Irst love-sick youth who proposes
Be patient, deliberate and sagacious
There is a world of happiness for you
between sixteen and twenty-five. Th
world would be a dreary old waste
it were not for the sweet faces of
young girls with their piquant sayings
and melting smiles. Your father has
bought ou a piano, and you hava
learned how to play after many Ion
and wearisome lessons- Don't spoil
all bv getting married, for after that
you won't have much use for your
piano. After you have reached twenty-five
it will be well to consider the
matrimonial problem with some seri
ousness. And even then, if you have
a good home, you need be in no hurry
to solve it.
