A DESERT DUELLO.
Bloody Aflray In the Wlldi of Nevada.
The Inyo Independent tells of a sin

occuried recently between Gordon Ellis
and Tat Shea, at Bennett's ranch, Lin

short time before the fight Ellis sold
some borax location to the Coleman
Borax Company, receiving $5,000 there
for. On the day before his last he got
into a dispute with a Mexican with
whom he was gambling. He notified
the Mexican that he should then and
there shoot him, but only through the

position behind the horse. Shea told
him that he did not want to snooi tne

Mathematical Corn.
Atlanta Constitution
There are some curious things about
corn, and one is where do the red and
speckled ears come from when you do
not plant any but white corn ; and an
other is why don't we find an ear with
an odd number of rows on it? You
can find a four-leaf clover, but I have
never found the odd row on an ear of
corn yet. It is always fourteen, or
sixteen. or twenty, or some even num
ber, and I would like to understand
what corn knows about mathematics,
and what objection nature has to odd
numbers.

"Ma?" "What, dear ?" "Is that

dear ?" "Is that your Pa ?" "Yes,

ed at intervals of fifteen minutes for
two hours, when an elderly man in an
adjacent room, who had been trying to
sleep all that time, rolled out of bed
with a thud, climed up into the tran
som, and putting his head out, shouted
at the top of his lungs : "Yes, it's me,
maw. and it's me paw ; now go to
sleep, you little hi at, or I'll come in

utes later a holy calm brooded over
the house.
Smart Widows at Saratoga.
Saratoga Letter In the Chicago Inter-Ocean.
It was a Chicago lady who this morn
ing won $500 with which to buy bon
bons or bonnets, whichever you like.
Ladies are getting to be very fond of
betting, and they are always pretty safe
in their ventures, since they never pay
when they lose, and several of them
have made some "lucky hits" already
this season. It is the fashion now,
not only for ladies, but the children
also have theirijetting books, and are
as expert in making entries therein as
anv follower of the turf. It took a
Chicago widow to inveigle a witching
old widower into belting a pair of
thoroughbreds against a box of cigars,
The widow won, as they usually do
and while we write is this moment
dashing behind the thoroughbreds on
her way t J the lake with another man
by her side. The?e widows are indeed
the most artful of creatures, and Sara
toga is full of them. There is one
pretty and lively woman of this species
here who has two engagements on hand
at the present time and several
others impending. She wears two en
gagement rings on her little fingers,
which would be most erabarassing to
most femi nines, but not to this sly
widow. When lover Xo. I sits by her
side it is his ring which glistens softly
upon her finger. The other ring is
tucked snugly away in ner belf . And
if she has not time to remove the ring
she turns if artfully around, so it ap
pears an insignificant rim of g'dd to
which nobody cjuld object. This widow
as mav be supposed, has a numerous
correspondence from love-smitten
youths, and her collection of original
love letters is something unique. The
other day she droped a package of letters
from one of her sweat!' earts, and a ri
val lover picked it up. This was rath
er troublesome for the widow, but as
usual, she found her way of escape.
There chanced to be another woman
with the same name as her own in the
pbice, and she declared the letters be
longed to her, and actually sent them
to hei, having first, however, arranged
matters with her namesake by making
her a valuable present.
A Thrifty Old German!
Not long since, during the absence of
the Emperor, an English visitor was
shown through one of the imperial
castles near Beriin. He looked upon
everything with the most utter Cock
ney superciliousness, until, say the
story tellers, he came aereas a collec
tion of walking sticks, when one of
these, a sturdy piece of hickory, quite
captivated his fancy . Long and long
ingly he gazed upon it. nor did his ad
miration decrease when his guide, the
steward's daughter, informed him that
it had been cut from the forest and
fashioned into shape by the Emperor's
own hands. At last, however, he was
constrained to tear himself away from
the object of his fancy, but just as he
was leaving the castle his admiration
of the stick blazed forth beyond con
trol, and drawing a handful of sover
eigns from his pocket he intimated to
his fair guide that by so much would
she become richer it she would allow
him to bear the coveted prize away.
Of course she- spurned the temptation
indignantly, and went away disconso
late. Well, the girl told her father
and he carried the story to the Fmpe
ror on his return to the castle a week
later. When K iiser William heard it
be laughed a right royal laugh and ex
claimed, "If the fellow had offered me
so much good gold for the stick, I
would have taken it and turned it into
the fund for the invalid soldiers."
Killed by a Comet.
Fall River Herald.
The old story of tho astronomer who
fell into a well while gazing at the
stars, and broke his neck, was repeated
Sunday morning at Stamford, Ct., with
a variation. Dr. W. II. Trowbridge, of
that town, was up at an early hour
viewing the comet from his roof, and
was so wrapped in the beauty of the
heavenly spectacle that he stepped off
the roof of the building, fell to the
groud and was killed. Hcec fábula do
cet, like the old one, that it is not well
to forget our earthly footing even in
the contemplation of 1 heaveny things
