lower part of the city,
I.tihitnoit cemetery, front which the
Lotties were stolen, was the fitvorlte
burying ground of the colored jieojili1.
Long before the hour wna si t for the
heal ing, crowds of colored people block
aded the several streets, and ilota to
lynch the prisoners were discussed, but
they were rushed through the crowded
hallway to the back room before
the people realized what was
going on; they then vented their disap
pointment in jeers and yells. At the
examination the colored element was
strongest, and several officers of the
Lebanon cemetery were preseut. Two
keys were found on McNaniee that
fitted the doors in the room where the
bodies were found for dissection, at
the Jefferson f.ollege. McNamee de
nied all knowledge .is to who gave
them to him, or what he was to have
done, but finally lie said he had waited
outside the cemetery while the others
brought the bodies, and that he knew
where they came from .
Kobert Chew, when arrested at the
cemetery, about 4:30 o'clock yesterday
morning, began crying, and said be
was paid $3 for every body
taken from the cemetery, and the mon
ey was handed him by his brother,
lie did not know how many graves had
been robbed. Sometimes Pillett did the
digging, and sometimes Levy. He had
been in the cemetery eleven years, and
the body snatching had been going on
for nine years. His brother-in-law,
Solomon Butcher, now in Maryland,
did it first, then a man named Myers,
then McNamee. Some times a wagou
came, and the driver said they were
short. Coffins were opened in.
the receiving vault and the
body was snatched. : The farce
of burying the empty coffin, was gone
through with next day.
The records of burial showed in two
months that fifty-five bodies were in
one grave, and this statement created
a sensation among the audience. Upon
the conclusion of the testimony, the
defendants were committed in default
of $5000 bail for a further hearing on
Friday. As soon as the crowd outside
learned that the examination was over,
an overwhelming rush was made for
the entry and gate-way, with threats
t lynch the prisoners. A sergeant and
ten men of the reserve were sent for,
and the snatchers then brought out.
The crowd made another rush, and
men and women struck at the prison
ers, who cowered before them. Police
men drew thbir clubs and on a trot
went down Chestnut street to the Cen
tral station, where the prisoners were
locked up for the night.
