Abbey was comparatively a young: man. He was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1846, and learned the trade of a jeweler with bis father, who was in the jewelry business, and bequea tbed him his business. In 1893, Mr. Grau was taken into the firm, to strengthen the plans that bad been made for a magniiicent grand opera season. When the firm secured the Metropolitan opera house, it was their ambillun to give a grand opera. The estimated total loss will reach $75,000. Origin of t'je fire is unknown. Offensive Partisanship. Washington, D. C, October 17. The action of the Canadian govern ment in dismissing three translators attached to the reporting corps of the house, on account of their offensive partisanship during tbe recent election, has been considerably talked of in local official circles, in view of the reports that certain office-holders were likely to feel tbe welgb of the presi dent's displeasure as a result of their activity in tbe present political strife.
