Weekly Optic, to-morrow. Order cut flowers through J. Blehl. tf Tha Faust company arrived from the oath, this mornlog. 8. A. Clemeots received a carload of choice bay, tbla morning. Considerable tine countrj produce Is be ing marketed in this city this fall. Don't miss the first and probably one of the best attractions of the season, to-night Tbe Military band concert and ball next Tuesday evening will be a pleasant affair. A fine drum major's suit and baton have arrived and will adorn tbe gracefal figure of George Berdan. Frank Casino, of Mora, was yesterday found guilty of bigamy, but sentence has not yet been passed. Cbas. Tamme promises that the opera house will be comfortably heated, to-night, no matter bow bad the weather Is ontside. a iw ana urowing industry of Van Mljtu.l County. A few years ago it was tbe oommcn be lief in this oouotry that potatoes were not indigenous tJ New Mexico and .that it was a waste of time to atcsmpt to raise tb.iu. Tbe few pioneers out In tbe oaflon of tbe Upper Bapello have shown bow utterly false this conclusion really was. MesNrs. Blake and Barker of. that district began a few years ago to experiment In the matter and have, at the same tlm Vljh a; profit to themselves mide experiments more profitable to the country than tbe experi mental atatloil, near this city,' will bare made, If It keeps up Its seeming past and present activity In fifty years to come. Only a few years ago every- potato that was consumed In Lis Vegas was Imported, now nearly half are raised In San Miguel county; aod the quality Is so .satisfactory that In asking f or bids for supplies for, tbs asylum, an institution that buys the best In food of all kinds, It was specified that native potatoes be furnished, and potatoes raised by Kev. S. L. Barker, of Beulab will soon be delivered at the asylum. . Fotato raising has become io profitable in the mountain canons that other farmers who have heretofore given their attention to goat, sheep and cattle raising have never turned their attention la part to tbe tuber crop, and Elmer Blake, who is In tbe city, to-day, says that a large proportion of his crop this year bas peen purchased by other farmers In bis own vlolnity for seed pur poses. , Balslng our own potatoes means that tbe many hundreds of dollars that have each year, for years, gone to Colorado aud Kansas, remain at borne, and in keeping tbe ourrent of money flowing toward It Instead of from It, is tbe secret of aoy com munlties success. Tbe potato crop of tbe tiapello will at least clost tbe out going our rent to some extent. " 1 Welcomed Here Also. Morrison's "Fau.t," was welcomed back to tbe Grand opera house last night by an audience tbat missed no Opportunity of giving friendly evidence of regard and hearty appreciation. Tbe play has been considerably Improved in several respect, since Its last production In this city, and the company, which includes a number of those wbo were In tbe cast last season, leaves little to be desired in Its interpreta tion of its various roles. But the most noticeable improvement over previous productions of "Faust", bas been in the scenio and mechanical effects. Brookly Standard Union. TRACK AND Tit A IN. Now that tbe election is over tbe man with tbe fortune wheel over on the plaza does not make change for so many new t2 bills. Considerable wool Ib changiufc bands in this city, tbe price is said to be at least 80 per cent, higher than It was before tbe election. . The contractors have nearly completed the splendid work in tbe west side Catholic church and it now presents a handsome appearance, Mr. ffm, Roberts while not an old man has made a world wide reputation as Mepbieto. Bee bim, to-night, at the Tamme opera house. Max Nordhaus will soon leave for a visit in Germany, and a "German" will be given in his honor by tbe members of the Montezuma club, Monday, November 16th. Tbe Las Vegas Chautauqua circle held a pleasant meeting, laot evening, at the home of Miss Belle Henry. The circle will meet with Miss Juliet Cochran next week. Without knowing of the motives In tbe matter, Tbe Optio will say right here that if the scheme to remove the east side post master from offioe is a political affair It should be nipped In the bud. Tbe Kansas City gold company has pur chased three valuable gold claims In Crow Creek In tbe Hopewell district from Mr, Tyson and expects to push work on the same as soon as spring opens up. Tbe members of tbe ladies' guild are each to earn a dollar entirely by their own efforts. Borne are baking bread, some are felling pop-corn, some mending old clothes, and in all as many schemes almost as there are members. The Mexican '.minister bas informed tbe secretary of state that American cattle men will be permitted to cross into Mexico in rounding np tbeir herds, under tbe same conditions as are applied to. Mexican cat tlemen by the United States custom officers. Edward Henry is seventy-three years old to-day, George Labadie rounds out bis twenty-eighth year, and Frank Stur ges is off duty, at this office, to-day, cele brating his birthday, but feels a little deli cate about publishing bis exact age to the world. v- Mariano Salazar, of Thk Optic compos ing room, will be excused from any and all typographical errors tbat he may make to-day, as tbe glad news came from Santa Fe, this morning, that be Is tbe father of bouncing new boy, and his mind would naturally drift over tbe mountains to where tbe little fellow is snugly wrapped In flannels. Those who have received Invitations to tbe "German" that is to be given at the Montezuma club, will take notice that the date of the same has been changed from Tuesday, the 17th," to Monday, the 16th of .this present .month, This change was made so that tbe occasion would not interfere with the Las Vegas military band's con cert and ball, to be given onjthe 17th inst, It is safe to say that more than half the cases that come up In the United States court nnder the Edmunds law are matters of persecution instead of prosecution Yesterday, it is said, a woman was before the court for trial and was sentenced to thirty days in jail, whom had not seen ber former husband In ten years and believed mm aeaa, yet probably as a matter of personal spite some of ber neighbors, who knew of the matter, she is made to stand this punishment. Of course when the matter is brought before tbe court and tbe guilt Is proven there Is no other course but eentenoe. But it does seem tbat tbe United States attorney could put a stop to con siderable of this injustice. Business is as good now on the road here as it has been at any time foi months. G. L. Humphreys, of tbe Atchison coal department, was a through passenger on No. 1, last evening. - Sixteen brakemen arrived oa No. 1 from the east, laBt evening, to accept positions on this division of the Atchison. J. S. C. D. Riggs, who is quite well remem bered here as train dispatcher, last spring, U now located in Arkansas City, on tbe southern branch of tbe Atobison. Trainmaster E. A. Baty, of Nickerson, bas resigned his position at tbat point, and left for Mexico, where he has accepted a position on the Mexican Central. Tbe speculators who got tips of tbe Atchison proceeding in Kansas and ex pectea to see tne stock go down, were chagrined to find tbat after tbe publication tbe stock rose one point. At tbe request of large number of tbe people of Newton, Mrs. Avery Turner, wife of Superintendent Turner of the mid die divirion of the Atobison, has consent ed to give a description of ber trip through Europe, taken during the past summer. irrea narvey, tne man who baa grown rich in the operation of the- Atchison eat ing nouses ana aintng cars, win, on January 1st 1897, succeed tbe Railway news company as dispenser of literature, peanuts, etc., on an Atcnieon passenger trains. Tbe Railway news company has held the contract for several years. Luther Braden, an employe In the Atlan tic & Pacifio shops at Albuquerque, met with a serious accident on last Thursday- He was repairing an engine, when an Iron casting weighing about four hundred pounds fell, striking him on tbe left arm and foot and ankle, badly bruising and crushing them. It will be "several weeks before he will be able to be about again Aii roaas running out 01 Bt. Louts re port that the promise of better business Is brightening every day.
