Charles Ballard has completed the purchase of George Urton's ranch near Roswell. He paid $3,200 for the ranch and $15.50 each for between 500 and 600 head of stock. Owen Wilson announces himself as candidate for sheriff of Grant county, subject to the democratic convention. John B.. Hodgdon, of Doming, is a candidate for- assessor. Saturday evening, at about 7 o'clock J. P. Whitney shot and killed a wild cat In the yard of mill Noi 2 near Ala mogordo. The animal was a large and beautiful specimen, weighing about 30 pounds. , A" stranger was arrested In Springer on a telegram from the penitentiary at Santa Fe by Deputy Sheriff Corbett, but he did not answer the description as to weight and height and was re leased. Col. C. C. Slaughter and family have spent the past week at Roswell look ing over his ranch Interests, and has decided on several Improvements for his ranch, among which will be 200 acres additional alfalfa. B. F. Barnett, of Roswell, is complet ing a private irrigating canal on the Feliz, near Hagerman, which will wa ter 2,000 acres of fine land. He has a forty-acre apple orchard near Ros well which he Values at $20,000. The peach crop in the Pecos valley is very well gone, only a few peaches being left. The crop was very large, over twelve cars having been shipped to eastern markets, to say nothing of the amount consumed at home. While leading a team of young horses, hitched to a wagon, through a gate at his ranch in the Pecos valley several days ago, J. W. Prewit was quite painfully injured by the horses knocking him down and running over lis hips. Invitations are issued to the mar riage of Katherine Neill, sister of Rev. Mayo Cabell Martin, rector of St Clement's church, El Paso, to Frank H. Seamon, brother of Prof. W. H. Seamon, formerly director of the fac ulty of the New Mexico school oi mines. Chas. Couipton and II. S. Stevens are developing the "Oxide" mining claims at the foot of Gold Hill. They thought they had only a gold mine but as depth is reached they find they have as much copper as gold. The lead is very wide and steadily Improv lng with depth. The much maligned order for the removal of drift fences on the range has been revoked by the Interior "de partment through the efforts of a firm of lawyers in Carlsbad. The an nouncement was hailed with joy by the Eddy county stockmen, upon whom the order worked great hardship. The "Black Copper" has . a largt force of men at work. This propert is situated about six miles up Ref River. Thousands of . dollars hav been spent upon it in the last thret years. It has a large tunnel and ovei 250 feet of shaft A large steam pump and air drill are steadily at work Enough ore is now on the dump to keep a 40-ton mill busy for months Lately a rich body of ore was struck. It Is reported that Deputy Sheriff Benjamin Williams, of Las Cruces, has ibeen killed on the Black range by cattle rustier. Williams left Silver City for the Black Range Co's ranch with Deputy Llewellyn, after Claude Barbee, who killed a man named Ham Hton in eastern Dona Ana county three weeks ago. He has not been beard from since. C. P. Kettle has opened a cannery in the northeastern part of Tularosa, and la doing flourishing business. He is a practical tinner, and turns 100 cans a day, and they are filled with peaches and other fruits and scaled. He has a force of people working gathering, cutting and canning, and as the fruit crops In that section are generally abundant, there is no reason why it will not grow Into a large and profit able business. George E. Wallace, of El Taso, clos ed the business of S. T. Gray at Cap Man to satisfy a claim .of $1,108 In favor of the Banner Distillery com pany, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Wal lace closed Mr. Gray's saloon at White Oaks and secured $250 and levied on the rest of the property for $858 bal ance. The tank of White Oaks a!so; it is said, has levied for a claim of ' $4,000. Mr. Gray owns a one-half In terest in he town of Capitan. A Mexican teamster, with a load of merchandise for a mountain trading Btore.eot caught in a waterspout fifteen miles from Albuquerque Friday night and he barely saved himself by being washed into the top of a pine tree, where he held on until the waters re- . ceded. His horses, wagon and good .4 f were washed down a usually sandy Ar royo and had not been found. It was thought the team, wagon and sup plies, after floating on top of "i'ie waves of water for a few miles, dis appeared in the quicksands and will never be recovered. Good Health. I he venerable Colonel Love is a prominent figure in Clayton, whom everybody knows and likes. Luis Garcia, one of the Union coun ty democratic war horses, is doing a large mercantile business. Tom Ketchura, the train robber. Is now well identified as being one of the men who killed Young Herzstein near Liberty, years ago. There are at least three mercan tile establishments at Clayton doing a large and flourishing business, and several smaller concerns. It Is expect ed ibefore a year passes that the Rock Island railroad will be running trains to this point and that Clayton will, be the end of a division and headquar ters for railroad shops. The road will give Clayton a direct connection east and fine shipping facilities. Now cat tle must be unloaded en route to Kan sas City. With the new railroad stock leaving this point will go through without stop or change. Keep your eye on Clayton. On account of some needed repairs in the school house, the public schools of Carlsbad will not open until Sep tember 17 th.
