OF THE DAY.

A COLONIALBACHELOR.
Jrom the Bocton Journal.
Boston's famous bachelor, Peter Paneull,
came to Boston from the family home at
New Hochelle, N. Y.. and was soon re
ceived at the home of his uncle, Andrew
Fanuell, a freaky old man, who, although
having been married In his early life In
France, seemed determined to prevent any
of his ccphews from indulging In that
alliance.
This old Huguenot merchant had taken
his nephew, Benjamin, brother of Peter,
to his heart and home, with the tacit un
derstanding that he should have his great
fortune on condition that he should re
main single. Things went on well In that
mansion on Tremont street until a fair
young lady chanced to cross Benjamin's
pathway, and all was up, for ho was
engaged before he hardly realized It, and
was, consequently, banished from his
uncle's home and prospective fortune.
It was then that Peter stepped Into the
beautiful home of luxury on the same con
ditions. No arrangement of domestic affairs at the
Tremont street mansion could have be?n
more to. the mind of the deceased uncle
than to have his nephew Peter and niece
-dary Ann each in single life occupying
that which ho could no longer enjoy, and
feasting themselves upon the good things
. of his garden. Their'a was a lot envied
by many.
Among the homes to which young Peter
was Introduced when coming to Boston was
that of the Jekyll family, consisting of
the head, who was collector of the port of
Boston: his queenly wife, with two tons
and two daughters, who were not far from

worship in the Faneull pew that Sabbath
Mary Ann was visibly disturbed, and Peter
spent his time In planning for the future
He at once made plans for the young
ladles to go out of town for a change, and.
during an interview with Miss Mary, ex
tracted a promise from her not to allow
the publication to be repeated on the fol
lowing Sabbath.
Mr. Faneull thought himself fortunate in
securing a homo for the ladh-s with a fam
ily of his friends at Haverhill, and It as
a relief to him when ho saw them seated

In the Faneull coach and started on thelr
journey. He was, however, uneasy when
he reflected upon what he had done. To
exact a promise without making one in
other words, to rob a young lady of n
fond hopo and not put one in Its place,
was beneath a man of his position. A re
solve to make her a contingent promise
brought temporary relief to him. but the
contingency was his bugbear, and he went
no farther. "Budge not" carried the day.
Believing that an ounce of prevention Is
better than a pound of cure, Peter Faneull
decided to have the Indira ramm tn. v,-
land.
They were not averse to the plan, and he
made all needful arrangements for them to
cross the ocean In comfort, belitting their
station. When the ship was ready to sail

responded to the call, and the distressed
merchant delayed tho vessel until he could
have time to pen a letter of explanation
to Mr. Robert Blacket Jekyll. in which he
says:
"I am sorry Miss Mary does not con
sult her own Interest so much as I could
wish. She suffered herself to be published
to ono Lord Linnington, of St. Christophers,
whoso character I need not tell you of.
Ho Is a worthless pretender to a great deal
of wealth and wit. without any of either,
to whom she would have been married had
not some friends joined forces with me and
prevented.
"That affair being tolerably Well over,
and Captain Thomas' stateroom hired for
the two ladles, and a sen-ant hired to ac
company them, I sent for them to come
to Boston to take passage, and I was tills
morning advised that Miss Mary had
changed her mind on account of a proposal
of matrimony made to her by Colonel Rich
ard Saltonstall. which sudden alteration I
find to be. on examination, from a visit or
two within two or three davs.
"Who has been the lady's adviser I
know not, but much fear It has been car
ried on by one and the other, with the
privacy and knowledge of them whom It
would have become better to have been
ignorant of anything of this nature.
"I have done my utmost to persuade her,
and am sure whoever has Influenced her
In these affairs cannot.be her friend. There
is no accounting for sax in affairs of love."
Alas for Peter. He was astonished that
so much could bo accomplished in three
days, when he had spent to many years
and done so little in that time. He did not
take into the account the fact that Colonel
Saltonstall was a widower, and like others
in similar affliction lost no opportunity to
oppropriato such comfort as awaited him.
