NEWS FROM CHICAGO. The Proposed Meeting of Western Passen ger -It en lu St, Louis Will Not lln Held. Chicago, 11L, July 31. No meeting of the Western p-ai-senger men will be held In St. Louis to-morrow to reorganize the demor alized conditions surrounding trafllc to and from Texas. It has been found lmitosalblo to secure a full meeting, and, unless a full representation can bo had, there Is no gain In holding a meeting nt all. No ac tion 1 an be taken with assuranco of per manent results, unless the Missouri, Kansas it Texas la fully In accord with the move ment, and all tho Interested lines have no hesitation In declaring thnt they do not propose to restore rules, so that the Mis souri, Kansas & Texas can reduce them whenever It take a notion. At a meeting of the Chicago-Omaha lines to-day it was decided that no attempt would be made to apply G. A. R. rates from Omaha and Council Bluffs via Chicago. At one time it was feared that this might be done, to the detriment of the regular rates between Omaha nnd Chicago. The Soo line lias announced a 0110 faro rate for the meeting of the Total Absti nence Society In the Last. The rate an nounced on all tho other lines is one and one-third, on the certificate plan. The Chlcago-St. Paul lines to-day urgently re quested of their Kastern connections that they allow them to meet, thiw rate, but tho request vvas denied. The Soo will now sell tbkets at one fare and the others at one nnd one-third The action of the Soo lino has naturally created wild Indignation among the Ohleigo-St. Paul lines, but it defends itself by the assertion, which is not far fiom being absolutely correct, that "there are no maintained rates between St. Paul and Minneapolis ond Chicago" This is putting it rather strong, but tho rates between these points aro now nnd have be.-n for some lime In a badly de morallzen condition. It is known positively that one road, which Is now heaping de nunciations uion tho Soo line, ottered some time ago to make the same tatc us tne soo line nas clone tor tne very same business, u did not get the business, how ever. Tho lines of the C.intr.il Traffic Associa tion have reaffirmed their rates nnd ar rangements to the Knights Templar con clave in Boston, with the exception that tho leturn tickets mny be used ns eatly as Augii't 27, Instead of August 30, ns origin ally provided. The Boston terminal line desired the association roads to change tho form of ticket, which vva.s ugreod upon at u Joint meeting last Friday, and threatened to charge them local rates unless they did so The I'entral Tr.illle lines will make no change In the plans, and as they hold tho money end of the situation In their hands, they are oonlldent that no effoit 11 111 bo made to charge them local rates. The Ijltrnt SellHittioll. The surprisingly low rates offered by tho Nickel Plate road to Boston and return, m count Knights Templar conclave, and a hob e of forty router.
