There is a urowlnif tendency In our country to prolong the presidents! campaign, due Chiefly to th custom of holding national conventions of tho two leading political parties six months prior to the Quadrennial election; and "Whereas, The coming election Involves the discussion of problem-, which affect the commercial, Industrial and financial Affairs of the nation, and Is likely 10 renilt In ex treme partisan agitation, which is calcu lated to unsetthi the public mind nnd con sequently create want of confidence In tb restoration of business prosperity; and "Whereas, The commerce of tho coun try has not ye fully recovered from the effect of a. commercial and financial depres sion, oaued largely by the agitation inci dent to the last presidential campaign, and experlcnco has shown that the trade inter ests of our country are forced into an un settled condition by the attending- excite ment of a national political con test, such a condition being threatened by thu cam paign of ISM; and "Whereas, There seem to be many rea sons, from a commercial standpoint, which constitute a strong appeal for a change in policy in favor of a shorter campaign than has heretofore buon ou-tomary; lherfore be it "Resolved, Ky the Commercial Club of Kansas City, that tho time lntervenlnp be tween the conventions of the two xreat par lies and the election ehould be hortend to three Instead of tix monthi; and "Hesolved, That In the interest of the commerce of our country, the general com mittees which have power to tix the dates of tho national conventions b- respectfully requested to consider earnestly the desira bility of flxlnt,- a later date for the holding of said conventions, and that a Joint con ference of the executive olilccr3 of these committees Is desirablo for the consldi ra tion of and action upon thi Important sub ject, und to this end tho committee on state and national legislation of this club is requested to prepar a memorial, to be submitted to the club at Its next meeting, and if approved by it then forwarded 10 the convention committees referred to; and "Resolved, That copies of these resolu tions together with the memorial to be pre pared by the committee on state and na tional legislation lie transmitted to the rep resentative commercl il bodies of the Unit ed States, with request for similar action on their part." Mr. Lawrance, upon urging the passage of the resolutions, stated that similar res olution, had been adopted by hundreds of eomni"iclnl organizations over the country; that a prolonged s-aon of political cam paigning wan extremely detrimental to the best trade interests of many of the states, and that he hoped the members of the club would view the matter In the ame light as himself and place the resolutions on recurd in the club's minutes.
