LITERATURE OF THE MAINE. ! —— ' The battleship Maine whose specacular reburial was described in a recent nv,mber of The Herald, has naturally been the subject of much writing and the theme of much eloquence. The last things perhaps, and the best possibly, have not yet been said or written. Still, we may count at least two bits of writing in connection with the Maine tragedy that will hold per manent places in our literature. One of these is the poem, “The Fighting Race,’ which appeared in an Eastern newspaper about the time of the Spanish war. The niime of the author is not known to the editor. It is not only good for its association with the Maine disaster, but for the splendid tribute to the "Fighting race.” The other *is a tribute to the cor poral of marines who reported the ac cident to the captain, in due form and with proper ceremony, in the midst of the awful confusion of the moment. The name of the writer is not lost in this instance. We give the poems in the order in which they • are here mentioned. t The Fighting Race. ' “Read out the names!” and Burke . sat back, 5 And Kelley drooped his head, f While Shea—they called him Scholar ' Jack— t Read out the names of the dead, f Officers, seamen, gunners, marines, The crews of the gig and yawl, : The bearded man and the youth in ■ his teens, Carpenters, coal-passers—all. ; Then, knocking the ashes out of his : Pipe, Said Burke, in an offhand way: i “We’re all in that dead man’s list, : by Cripe, Kelly and Burke and Shea!” : Well, here to the Maine, and I'm sorry for Spain,” Said Kelly and Burke and Shea. ! “Wherever there’s Kellys there’s trouble,” said Burke. “Wherever fighting's the game, "Or a spice of danger in grown men's work,” Said Kelly, “you’ll find my name.” “And do we fall short,” said Burke getting mad, “When it’s touch and go for a life?” Said Shea, ‘‘It’s thirty-odd years, bedad. Since I charged to drum and fife Up Marye's Height, and my old can teen Stopped a bit of lead on the way; There were blossoms of red on our sprigs of green— Kelly and Burke and Shea— And the dead didn’t brag.” “Well, here’s to the flag!” Said Kelly and Burke and Shea. “1 wish 'twas in Ireland, for there’s the placq,” Said Burke, “that we’d die by right, In the cradle of our soldier race, After one stand-up fight; My grandfather fell on Vinegar Hill. And fighting was not his trade. But his rusty pike's in the cabin still. And there's Hessian blood on the blade.” “Aye, aye,” said Kelly, “the pikes were great When the word was ‘clear the way! ’ We were thick on the roll in ninety eight— Kelly and Burke and Shea.” "Well, here's to the pike and the sword and the like!” Said Kelly and "Burke and Shea. And Shea, the Scholar, with rising joy. Said, “We were at Ramillies, We left our bones at Fontenoy And up in the Pyrenees; Before Dunkirk, on Landen's plain, Cremona, Lille and Ghent; We were all over Austria, France and Spain, Wherever they pitched a tent. We’ve died for England from Water loo To Egypt and Dargai;” “Well, here's to the good, honest fighting blood!” Said Kelly and Burke and Shea. “Oh, the fighting races they don't die out. If they seldom die in their bed, For love is first in their hearts no doubt,” Said Burke; then Kelly said: . “When Michael, the Irish archangel, stands— The angel with the sword— And the battle-dead from a hundred lands Are ranged in one big horde, Our line that for Gabriel's trumpet waits, Will stretch three deep that day, From Jehoshaphat to the Golden Gates, Kelly and Burke and Shea.” “Well, here’s thank God for the race and the sod!” Said Kelly and Burke and Shea. Bill Anthony, Marine. N. A. Jennings, in New York World. -- — When above the awful din rose the sailors’ voices shrieking, "Help! help! For God's sake help us, ere we sink into the sea!” When the light from bursting shells showed the decks with blood were reeking, At ‘‘attention” stood Bill Anthony with courage bold and free. Straight and cool as on parade, from the danger never shrinking, The orderly saluted as in steady tones he said: "I have, sir, yo inform you that the ship's blown up and sinking.” Then waited for his orders while the shells crashed overhead. In the fury of the charge, when the cannons roar and thunder, And men are drunk with fighting, acts of bravery are seen; But to stand still at ‘‘attention” while his ship was rent asunder Was the kind of courage show-n by Bill Anthony, marine. In the roster of the heroes who have striven for Old Glory, High on the roll of honor give Bill Anthony a place: And when our theme is courage, let us not forget the story Of his standing at "attention” when death stared him in the face. ************** HERALD WANT ADS I***************** FOR SALE.—From 100 to 650 acres of land, with sweet surface water, 1-4 mile from Sebastian Sta tion on main line of St. Louis Brown sville and Mexico R.
