Very Amusing; Play Given 'With Great Success by a Cast of Local Amateurs. To The Herald. San Benito, Tex., March 24—The play given under the auspices of the Civic League Thursday evening at the Valentine theatre, was well at tended, and declared a success from both a financial and a critic’s stand point. The performance given was the "Microbe of Love,” and those taking part deserve especial menTion for the way in which their respec tive parts were handled. The open ing scene represents a meeting of a Spinisters’ Club, those present hav ing come -together to devise ways and means to secure a husband, and to be enabled to hold him after he had been secured. The methods 4 suggested were indeed luducrous, but in spite of this, those present were determined that they should secure a husband in spite of the— weather. It was also announced that Sears Roebuck & Co., and other like firms were giving away hus bands, with the purchase of certain household articles, such as wash tubs, etc. Madame Hymen Cupid was at this point introduced, who assured the patient ladies that she had a remedy that never failed, called the "Microbe of Love” that all that was required of a lady in need of a spouse was to be near when she injected the microbe into the unsuspecting victim. The meeting of course voted unanimously to ac cept Madame Cupid’s offer, she hav ing given the names of a number of delighted San Benito people, who had given testimonials to her never failing remedy, such as husbands who had loved after ten' years of married life, as they had never loved before, and despairing mothers who never entertained hopes of securing husbands for their daughters, who had been fully satisfied as to its un failing qualities. The ladies in this scene were, Misses King, Louise Word, Kate Purvis, Williams, Helen Spears, Swensen, Duckett, Ethel Johnson, and Miss Marthana Cow gill who took the part of Madame Hymen Cupid. Scene number two is a Bachelor Club meeting, all of those present intent on not being buncoed into any marriage game, and preparing a petition flor preparation (to the local city authorities, asking that young and unsuspecting bachelors be protected on the streets of our city, from the dangers of rude spins ters, who had no regard for a gen tleman’s r^hts. Mr. Henpeck was introduced at this meeting ajid delivered an ora tion congratulating those present on the movement which would event ually end man’s freedom from woman’s awful rule. Mrs. Henpeck. armed with a dangerous looking base ball bat, arrived on the scene, mak ing Mr. Henpeck disappear in' a rather “pronto” manner. Scene number three shows Madame Hymen Cupid at work, with her dangerous hypo, fully charged with the microbes (about the size of a spray pump used for spraying treees.» Needless to say the experi ment was a marked success. The acting throughout was exceedingly good and the audience was kept in an uproar by the use of the names of local persons whose names were substituted for those taking part in the play. In addidtion to those al ready mentioned, the others taking part were, Messrs. J. J. Calloway, Todd, Shirar, Jesse Burress, Scott Brown and last but not least Mr. William Morrison. SAN BENITO LANDS TO HAVE DRAINAGE. (Continued from page one.) any cheaper if it became an inde pendent district, assuming that the ditch proposed by the district was put in, and that leaving the pro posed ditch out of consideration, he did not think that the cost wrould be materially increased by hitching up with the district now pending. Col. Heywood said that he differed with Judge Spears upon the latter's admission yesterday that the Rio Hondo strip did not need drainage. After hearing the arguments ol counsel on both sides, the court ruled that drainage was necessary for the entire district, that the pe tition be accepted, and the engineer’s report be brought before the body in order that an election for a bond issue may be ordered. The counsel for the petitioners were Spears and Morrison of San Be nito, w’hile Judge W. E. .Hawkins, assisted by M. B. Jennings of Rio Hondo, represented the contes:ants. Judge Hawkins for the contestants gave notice of appeal to the district court. m ut Ji * * WANT ***************** FOR SALE.—From 100 to 650 acres of land, with sweet surface water, 1-4 mile from Sebastian Sta tion on main line of St. Louis Brown sville and Mexico R.
