Shovelling Mud—,n order that they would not have to wait for the mud to dry iiefore proceeding with the oar track and paving work, workmen were engaged yesterday in shoveling the mud in the bad places on 12th street into wheelbarrows and hauling it into the alleys. The most beautiful picture ever shown in Brownsville was seen at the Grand last night. Cinderella, played by Mabel Talliferro, in three reels, was a dream. Stage settings and costumes were beautiful. Mabel Taliaferro, in her part of Cinderella proved herself to be justly called the Queen of American actresses. Two packed houses, showed the people ap preciated Mr. Gilhousen’s effort In securing such a classic. While each show was packed, every one was comfor'able, the building being well ventilated, and although a sultry evening the house was kept cool through the entire show. Negro Paving Experts—After two days of rest the street pavers re sumed work yesterday morning. The usual crowd of loiterers gathered to watch the two negroes employed in laying the blocks. These two men keep a force of from eight ;o twelve men constantly busy supplying the blocks as fast as they tan lay them. Len. one of the negroes, yesterday established a record by laying a row J of blocks from the car line to the curb in 37 seconds. The paving company has another negro who is an ar'ist in his line. This negro answers to the name of Wash and is employed in smoothing the sand in front of the block layers. Mr. Hud son says that Wash has been with him for years, and he considers him one of his best men.
