In addition to the speech making there will be aquatic races in the Arroyo Colorado, greased pole climbing, and many other sports of an athletic nature. EAT MORE R|PE FRUIT. This is the season that fresh fruits should be eaten liberally and the ; value of a fruit diet fully establish- ! ed. There is an abundance of fruits i of most all kinds. Farmers are sup plied from their own orchards and city people may buy at reasonable prices. The quality is excellent in most instances and the people are fruit hungry because the crop has been short for several years. Then there is another reason and one that appeals very strongly to most people: the fruit diet is cheap. Meats of all kinds are high and dairy products are bringing good prices. Then why no: eat plenty of fruits and save the grocery bill? j Even if you are a producer of dairy products you need not hesitate to t'at plenty of fruit from your own oreuard because the dairy products may be sold and much of the fruit •an not: it is perishable and much Is sure to be wasted. The same ar srumon- may he made in favor of ■telling meat and eating the fruit. , But the cost of living should nor i be the only reason for eating fruits ! in season. Good ripe fruits are! luscious, appetizing an nourishing. ! We as a people eat too much meat j and not enough fruit and vegetables, j More fruits mean better health and I perhaps a longer li Ranch. ^t 1 TONIGHT A PHINCBSS OF TIIE HILLS. CHANGE IN MANAGEMENT OF FOX THEATRE The present management of the Fox Theatre regrets that a vadue ville show was billed at the theatre this wreek and that the prices w'ere raised. The contract with the vaudeville people was entered into by the old management and hence ithe bill had to be put on. Hereafter our prices will be our regular ones of 5 and 10 cents whether or not vaudeville attrac tions are put on. The past week's performances have not only made many of our custom ers dissatisfied, but have also result ed in a nightly loss to the manage- j ment. > We ask a share of the patronage of the amusement loving people of |, Brownsville, and will assure them that we shall do our best to please them by giving a good clean show. FERNANDEZ Corner J2th and Adams Streets, Brownsville, Texas. -——_ A SUBSTITUTE FOR KISSING. The Milwaukee physicians have in’ this flustered and tortured land ! mdor a very heavy obligation. For they have given the people a new subject for discussion. We can to 3ay turn for a moment from the In itiative. referendum, recall, the third termer, etc., to the bill which is to be introduced in ;hc next leg islature ^>v the Milwaukee Physi i iaus' association, intended “to stop the practice of kissing and stamp the habit as a blot on civilization and a menace to health and de cency.” Wise reformers as they are, he doctors do not propose to pro hibit, for they offer a substitute— namely, “rubbing noses or fore heads.” We know of no more progressive legislation than this. As such we take pleasure in commending it to the brotherhood of uplifters and na tion savers. Of course, there are practical difficulties In ;he way, and it may be that some education will be required to lift the whole nation up to the Milwaukee level. If we are to forbid kissing we shall have to prescribe a penalty for violation af the proposed law'. We confess tha' at the present stage of civiliza tion it would seem somewhat strange for a policeman to arrest two ladies caught kissing each oth ’r. One can imagine that the •kisses” might be a mere passive victim, a victim submitting for fear )f giving offense by resisting. But, jf course, that would be a question for the court. We do not consider t\ie case of “young men and maid ms,” for that is perilously compli cated . It is safer to limit the di^ussion o the "abstract kiss.” or hat ex changed betgeen women. Is ft pro x»sed to send the kissers to prison. >r merely fine them, or "both?” Would the community “stand for” such severity? That the practice I could—and would—be gafely en- ’ staged in in ;he home of one of the parties we do not doubt. The law could hardly reach such a ca*n. We can not hope to have a police man in every home, and certainly can not permit the officer to break in simply on suspicion that kissing is going on. That would be a vio lation of the hill of rights. But was there ever a reform that was easy to establish? Sur4ly not. All ire suggest is that perl) JV education should precede lee .-latum Of one thing, however, we are Itulte sure, IGiir Lady of the Lake I Select Boarding School for Young Ladies and Missis The Highest Standard in Every Department. It is. indeed, a reversion to savagery. The theory of providing a substitute for the forbidden thing is sound. But the substitute in this caw* will not i ' do. Besides, do not microbes tamp « out on the foreheads and noses of folks? Once again, we acknowledge lour indebtedness to the Milwaukee doctor*. Their anti-klsalng crusade ought to provoke wide discussion.— A^anapetla N««a 1 A.
