Col gin, of this city, who is known to fame in Texas as the owner of Trin ity Joe Sirdar, the registered Eng lish setter who took the first prizes at all state fairs last winter, has just been appointed a director of the Texa* Kennel Club. Trinity Joe has the proud distinction of being reg istered in both the F. D. S. B. of Chicago and the A. K. C. of New York. Painful Accident—C. L. Johnson, fountain man at the Paragon con fectionery, nearly lost the little finger of his right hand yesterday when he fell on a broken bottle. He also received several cuts about the hand and wrist. Poynter in the Brownsville Grocery Co., and has thus become virtually ?ole owner of this business. Mr. Colgin expects to expand the busi ness and will keep it in the fore as one of the leading grocery firms of the Valley. W. J. Hauser will take a position with the company as salesman beginning Sept. 1. City Court. Ten property owners appeared be fore City Recorder Augustine Celaya yesterday to answer to charges that they had violated the sanitary ordi nances of the city. The specific charges were failure to connect with the sewerage lines. All were dis missed upon their promise that they would make the connections within a reasonable length of time. Gorge Cleveland was found guilty on a charge of speeding his auto mobile and failing to blow his horn while turning a corner. He was fined $1 and costs, and gave his check for the amount. SCHOOL BOARD APPOINTS SCHOOL FUND DEPOSITORY Brownsville Bank & Trust Co. Suc cessful Biddei—No More City School Vouchers Discounted. At a meeting of the city school board held yesterday afternoon, at the office of R. B. Creager, the bids of three city banks as depository for the school fund were opend. That of the Brownsville Bank and Trust company was accepted. This bank offers 3 per cent interest on daily balances, and offers to carry overdrafts at 8 per cent. The other bids were by the First National bank, offering 2.1 per cent on balances and 8 per cent on over drafts, and the Merchants National bank, offering 2 per cent on bal ances and 8 per cent on overdrafts. The object in providing for over drafts is to be prepared at all times to pay cash for the teachers’ vouch ers, in order it hat they may not be compelled to discount their vouchers as so often has happened in the past. Thoae present at the meeting were the president, B. E. HJnktey, the secretary, C. Garza, R B. Oreager and M. J. Garcia. "The board has paid go far about $ 3 (Jj 0 0 to teachers on certificates of attendance at the summer normal schools, which was the first time 'that such allowance has been made. It is announced that the state school fund for the coming session will pay $6.85 per capita. As Brownsville has enrolled 2,523 school children, this will provide $17,282.55 for the maintenance of the city schools besides «he amount to be derived from the local tax. The rate of this tax has not been decided upo». -o MR. DWYER RESIGNS AS LIEUT OF POLICE Janie3 M. Dwyer, night lieutenant of police since last April and act ing chief of police since the death of Joe L. Crixell, yesterday presented his resignation to Mayor A. B. Cole, requesting that it be accepted at once. Mr. Dwyer came to Brownsville from San Antonio about a ytear ago, and was apponited to the position on the police force last April. When Mr. Crixell died, he took charge of the department in the capacity of act ing chief of police. Mr, Dwyer will continue to reside in Brownsville, but has made no plans for the future as yet. Mayor Cole stated yesterday that Mr. Dwyer’s successor has not been selected. O. M.
