Bntered at the Postoffice at Browns ville, Texas, as Second Class Mail Mat ter. MONDAY. DECEMBER 23. 1012. SOME PEACEABLE WAV. Following the announcement on the part of our government to the effect that the State Department is prepar ing strong representations to Mexico on the subject of the destruction of American lives and the property of Americans, comes a statement from President Madero’s brother to the efect that Mexican troubles are great ly exaggerated. He declares that there are large areas of Mexico which are practicully undisturbed by present troubles; that the so called rebels have no organization and no army worth the name: that the only warfare there is guerrilla warfare. Perhaps what he says is true in a measure, and because it is measurably true the government of the United States has been patient under provo catim that would hardly have been endured of any other nation. Yet we must not forget that it is in that very ^■igaorrilla warfare that American pro perty owners are being robbed and American citizens are being carried away from their homes and held for ransom. As to the extent of that same guerrilla warfare, Mr. Madero is wrong or the press dispatches are wrong. It happens at this time that the imposed action of cur state department is founded, not upon things printed in the newspapers, but upon representations from reputable people Yvho have been on the ground where the outrages are committed and who know whereof they speak. Americans do not want war with Mexico, and they do not contemplate war. Nevert heless it must be clear to the world that the United States cannot endure forever the outrages daily committed against Americans in Mexico. Some peacable way will be found, no doubt, to protect our countrymen there; but a way of some sort must be found ana that speedily. -—i, By the time the Balkam allies get through with Turkey it will no longer be the Sick Man of Europe, but The Armless Legless European Wonder. — — I^ouis Heinshimer of New York, re cently deceased, had the distinction of having the largest known cash balance to his credit when he died, to wit $3,500,000. It is the sort of dis tinction, however that does a man very little good after he is dead. O Mr. Wilson gives it out that we may look for cabinet announcements about the first of March; which is the time of year when we usually look out for squalls. o The ambassadorial conference has announced that Servia may have a seaport and that Albania may have autonomy. The ambassadoral confe rence does not represent tne people who have done the fighting, but the people who have invited then.selves to referee the panic'. -0 In the meanwhile the AustriaHun gary empire is mobilizing its army at a cost of $800,000 per diem., or $4,800. U 000 per week. It iseasy to see that this Mkvill run up into large figures in a very 'rt time if it keeps on. / , There is a young man in Kansas City who wishes to learn to spell and define every word and syllable of the unabridged dictionary. Yet as that particular highway to knowledge is is long and tedious, requiring both leisure and patience, he wrote to the judge asking to be locked up in jail for three years. He kindly offered to commit any crime that would enti tle him to that sort of accommodation for that length of time. The judge perhaps recommended him to take a j few elementary iessons in the New, Testament before tackling the dictio nary, under such circunstances. Let us hope so at ieast. . -Q The twenty-sixth report of railway 'commissioners shows that lO.bsr* prsons j were killed in railway accidents last year, while lbb.Sns were injured. The figures look rather large, and, making all due allowances for the extra-haz-( ordous nature ol railroad work as far! I employes are eourerned. it N quite evi-1 dent that the number of casualities is; much greater than it should be. As to! the employes, the commission finds that j ss jm*r cent of accidents were caused ! by mistakes on their part. On the other hand it i> discovered that out of S21-"» j derailments, -ATll 1 were caused either by j defects of roadway or by defective equip- j ! ment. j -O - — j A so< iety ot young Ionics in ( liieago have pledged themselves never to wed; any man with an income of less than I *7.000 a year. It will re quire some deliberation to frame a shut-up-or-put-up proposition in such a delicate way that the other fellow will either put-up-or shut-up without feeling under the least constraint. J-o The president has gone to see if it safe to establish civil government in the canal Zone. Where’s the hurry? Better give em longer time for the principles of liberty, equality and fn - ternity to soak in. i -(> The president is the recipient of a pair of home-knit gloves from a dear old lady in Michigan, aged 04. She begged him to accept them as a Christ mas gift. They will not be of much use to him in Panama, but they should come in handy when he goes to his new job in New Haven. It is pleasant to record the fact that the president ’appreciated the gift and accepted it. -O j At this Christmas time it is good to read that American missionaries at Saloniki are caring for 20,000 Turkish refugees from Macedonia. This is the new call, following the new vision, ‘‘Come over from Macedonia and be helped by us.” -O t Ask the people who live in the paved district how they would like to trade with the people who live in the unpa ved district. -O- | The south graciously accepts the president’s congratulation on Wilson’s election and is pleased that the presi dent is pit-a^ed.
