Make Gain of 5G0 Cars

Since Jan. 19
Climbing steadily toward a new
high reeerd, Valley fruit and vege
table shipments today were only 42
cars behind the record for the cor
responding date last year. Since
January 10, when the season's total
was 660 cars less than that for the
same date in 1928. the total has
gained daily, and by February 1 is
expected to exceed the record of
February and March shipments
are expected to be far heavier than
last season, and the final total for
the season will run around 25,000
cars, shippers predict.
The movement to date includes
1,095 cars of fruit and 6,321 of veg
etables, a total of 4,416, as com
pared with 996 cars of fruit, 3,460 of
vegetables, a total of 4,456 at the
same date last year.
The principal gain is shown in the
movement of mixed cars, which cen
stitute approximately 60 per cent of
the vegetable total, over 1,400 mixed
cars having been moved. Cabbage
ranks second with 611 cars, and
beets and carrots third with 701
cars. The latter mixtures of the
Weslaco went into the lead
among Valley shipping points last
week with a total of 655 cars, and
Mercedes is aclose second with 626
cars. Donna and San Benito are
close for third place, San Benito
having moved 310 cars and Donna
