Everglades Of ; Florida Viewed By Hoover Party CLEWISTON, Fla., Feb. 16.—— j President-elect Hoover expected to- j day to conclude bis Inspection ef what Floridians call “the last out post of America”—the Everglades section, which, with the aid of the federal government, they hope to cotivert into a great sugar bowl with an annual hundred million dol lar crop. Mr. Hoover was impressed by what he saw on the first day of his journey and Governor Doyle E. Carlton, and members of his cab inet who are accompanying him are hopeful he will be even more im pressed today by the will with which the people of Clewiston and Canal Point are going about rebuilding after the catastrophe they suffered six months ago. Before going into the last phase of his journey, the president-elect viewed pictures showing what hap pened in the 1928 hurricane aroui^ the southeastern shores of Lake Okeechobee and listened to an out line by Maj. Gen. Jadwin of the plan of flood relief which army engineers have recommended to congress. Th:s plan contemplates three phases—the building of a levee on the south side of the lake 31 feet high, drainage canals from the lake into the Caloosahatchee river, and the Improvement of the Saint Lucie canal into the Atlantic near Palm Beach.
