Though cooperative purchasing is not likely to become so large a fac tor as cooperative selling in Amer ! ican agriculture, it promises never J! theless to become extremely import ! ant. In 1925, the division of cooper ! ative marketing obtained reports from 10.803 ad ive farmers’ cooper | ative asociations. Nearly half these i associations reported making co ; operative purchases for their mem , bers. In 1927. farmers’ associations 1 cooperatively purchased feed. seed. A fertilizers, containers, and other supplies valued at more than $300, 000.000. Two farmers’ business or ganizations in that year each han dled a total cooperative purchasing business in excess of $10,000,000, an other handled approximately $7,800. 000 of cooperative purchasing. Half a dozen or more associations each j did a cooperative purchasing busi I ness in excess of a million dollars. I Statistical data as to the com | modities most commonly purchased ! have been obtained for 1925. In that ! year 62 per cent of the reporting associations bought feeds. 47 per ! cent bought fuel, 30 per cent bought I fertilizers. 15 per cent bought build I ing materials. 13 per cent bought | fencing. 11 per cent bought imple ! menfs and machinery. 7 per cent bought hardware, and 30 p«r cent of I the associations purchased miscel laneous commodities. One of the most recent develop ments has been the formation of farmers’ associations handling gas j oline. kerosene, lubricating oil. and | other petroleum products. Many of ; the oil-buying associations have i been extremely successful. Forty ’ j such associations in 1927 made an I average saving of 10.3 per cent of sales, according to a study conduct ed bv the University of Minnesota in cooperation with the division of cooperative marketing of the de partment of agriculture. rnocREss shown EL PASO. Tex., March 25.—Pros perity of the southwest was reflected in the facts brought out at the an nual chamber of commerce meet ing and banquet here Monday night . Total investments in El Paso are approximately $23,000,000 in new en terprises. completed, under con struction. autl definitely planned for I construction within the next few months. * m McAllen Branch of Concrete Pipe Co. ]\ow in Operation The official opening of the McAllen branch of the Mercedes Concrete Pipe Company was held just recently, at which time residents from all parts of the Valley visited and inspected the new plant which is one of the largest and most up-to-date manufacturing plants in the Rio Grande Valley. me McAllen brancn, now in ruilj operation, represents an investment of approximately $50,000. It employs from 30 to 60 men and is fully as large as the parent plant in Mer cedes. The machinery installed was designed by the engineers of the company and built especially for them. The large pipe making ma chine turns out all standard sizes up to 30 inches in diameter, and is the first machine of this type ever manufactured that will make this large size pipe, the largest heretofore being 24 inches. The main building of the plant is 40 by 260 feet, with an addition of 50 by 50 feet both constructed of corrugated iron. An office has been constructed at the westend of the building. A concrete platform and material l".. " ' ■ ■' '■ ■ ■ ..■ bins occupy a space of 50 by 110 feet, thus giving 18.400 square feet of floor space in addition to the im mense plat of ground to the north where the concrete pipe will be stored for curing. “The demand for our high qual ity pipe in the West end of the Val ley was so large that we could not supply the necessary amount from the Mercedes plant,” one of the of ficials of the company stated yes terday. “The new branch will take care of all our territory west of Alamo and already we have several extra large contracts to fill. The plant is in full operation, and it is probable that we will run day and night shifts in order to make im mediate deliveries on our con tracts.” U. S. Again Freed From Outbreak of Hoof, Mouth Ills The United States is again free from foot-and-mouth disease and an official order of the U. S. depart ment of agriculture, effective March 18. removes the quarantine placed upon the limited affected area in California. The outbreak was of the shortest duration and involved the smallest number of premises and animals of any of the outbreaks that have occurred. It also caused the least interference with agri culture and industry in the sur rounding territory. Extensive inspections indicate that the last ccstige of the disease was destroyed four weeks ago by the slaughter and burial of infected herds and the cleaning and disin fecting of the premises. But as a precautionary measure the premises on which the disease was found are being held under veterinary super vision pending the outcome of the customary tests in which numbers of susceptible livestock are used. As a still further safeguard the depart ment will maintain an adequate force of trained veterinarians in the locality to deal promptly with any recurrence which past experience has shown to be possible in deal ing with this treacherous malady. BEAUMONT. Tex.. March 25.—UP) —W. A. Smart, dairyman, says a winter oats pasture has increased the income from his herd of 43 dairy cows by S12 a day. One hour a day on this pasture, he explains, adds 20 gallons to the day’s production of milk. BETTER PORK EXPORT PREDICTED FOR U. S. WASHINGTON, March 25.—<*»)—1 Exports of meat3 and fats from the United States In 1928, amounting to 1.263,806.635 pounds valued at $160, 234,125, may be surpassed in 1929. The federal outlook report says “factors affecting the foreign de mand for American pork products have a more favorable aspect for the 1928-29 season than a year ago.” While the 19£8 exports were about 13 per cent lower in quantity and 19 per cent lower in value as compared to the 5-year average. 1924-1928. they showed a gain of 60,000.000 pounds over 1927 exports and a slight increase in value. Lard ex ports made the largest gains over 1927. adding 13 per cent in volume and 7 per cent in value. Bacon ad vanced 11 per cent in quantity, but the value was about the same. Temporary lambing sheds, built of light frame material and cov ered with canvas, are excellent K>r sheep in sections of the country where the snowfall is not exces sive. This type of shed is ideal from a sanitary standpoint as the canvas can be removed to iet plenty of sunshine inside, and if necessary the shed can be easily moved. Skinning an animal is most eas ily done before the carcass has cooled. Avoid cutting or scoring the skin, but at the same time ie move all the flesh from it. Defects from scores and flesh lower tne quality of many country hides. Mont., Marrh 25.—(.^F)— Efficiency and invention have put cattle rustling on a production basis. Charles M. Dowlin, president of the Montana Livestock association, says losses from stolen cattle are mice as great as when the range wtu open and rustlers depended upon the night and fast horses. The mod ern cattle thief butchers the ani mals where he finds them in the pasture and hauls the beef away in motor trucks. He has no trouble in disposing of his loot among street peddlers and established dealers. Dowlin. also a state senator from ! Rosebud, recommends closer inspec tion of hides, heavier penalties for stock theft and a tax on stockmen to finance investigation and prose cution of rustlers. It is important to use good-sized eggs for hatching to get larger chicks. Choose eggs weighing at least two ounces. Continued use of small eggs for hatching results in lowered vigor of the laying or breeding stock and a decrease in the size of eggs for market.
