NEW DISTRICT STARTS PUMPS First Irrigation Water Is Ap plied To Lands In Dis trict No. 10 The first irrigation water for Cameron County Water Control and Improvement District No. 10, comprising approximately 7,000 acres known as the Rutherford Harding lands, was turned on this week, and over 1,000 acres of the tract has been irrigated. Two 36-inch pumps, each driven by a 250-h. p. electric motor, are located on the resaca which tra verses the tract, the water being supplied through the Los Fresnos system. The first land to receive watering included approximately 600 acres which has been set to citrus fruit. Extension of the canal system to cover the entire tract is progress ing rapidly, and within a few weeks the entire area will be under irri gation. Concreting of canals will not be started until October or No vember, engineers state, in order to give the earthwork an opportunity to become well settled. The district lies east of the Los Fresnos tract. It was organized over a year ago, and the irrigation system financed. A contract was made with the Los Fresnos system whereby the district paid a specified amount for use of the Los Fresnos canals and a pro rata of the oper ating and maintenance cost of that sytsem. The entire canal system of the new district will be placed under concrete, and a number of the pur chasers are planning installation of underground distribution systems. Construction of the power lines of the Valley Light & Power Co. was completed into that section last weeks, and the two pumps hooked on. The lines will be extended to cover practically the entire district. i Flashes of Life — (P7 The Asiociated Press) (By The Associated Press.) ORANGE, N. Mackey had been with West at his room in the Hampton hotel and that at 9 p. m„ he rose to go home. West pushed an unopened knife against his ribs, Mackey de clared, and playfully said, “No, you’re not going home. You’re go ing to stay here for a while.” A dresser drawer, containing a .45 calibre pistol, was partially open. Mackey said, and West, thinking the pistol was on an empty chamber, seized the weapon and pressed against Mackey’s ribs. Again, he said, “you're not go ing home,” according to Mackey. There was an explosion. Mackey slumped to the floor, as West, panic-stricken, summoned an am bulance and attempted to aid his stricken companion. His friend, grief-stricken, stood helplessly by as physicians worked •frantically to save Mackey’s life.
