CAR BUILDERS FIGHT INTERNATIONAL WAR NEW YORK. April 1—An inter national struggle for supremacy in the world motor car market is de veloping between the principal man facturers of the United States and those of England, France, Italy and Germany. , .. . The Ford company s energetic ef forts to plant subsidiaries at strate gic points throughout Europe has spurred the General Motors coi - poration to contemplate counter measures. Well informed Wall street I sources understand that an addi tional flotation of shares in the Ford company of Germany, amount ing to $800,000 will soon be made. It is reported that an alliance is being formed between the General Motors corporation and the largest French motor car concern, the Cit roen company. It is accepted as fact by Wall street that President Sloan of the General Motors corporation is undertaking by the purchase of European companies or by agree ments with them, to prepare for Ford's invasion of Europe. _ 4 Boats Report Big Catches of Shrimp Off Point Isabel The shrimp canning plant at Point Isabel, the largest on the low er Gulf coast, has been operating to capacity the past two weeks to handle the large catches of shrimp brought in by the trawlers. Eight boats are now engaged in trawling in the open Gulf, and daily catches running as high as 8,000 pounds have been made by the in dividual boats. The shrimp are the largest on the Gulf coast, accord ing to experienced trawlers who have operated on the upper coast many years. The high quality of the shrimp from the lower section of the coast already has attracted the attention of dealers, and the demand for the products of the canning plant is greatly in excess of the supply, the management reports. Cruiser Added To Yacht Fleet At Point Isabel Another cruiser was added to the fleet of the Point Isabel Yacht club last week when W. H. Hall of Stuart Place brought into port “The Tex as,” a 48-foot cabin cruiser pur chased at Corpus Christi. The Texas is one of the largest boats of the fleet. It is powered with a 75-horsepower motor and has plenty of speed. Mr. Hall, who re cently moved to the Valley from Oklahoma, was one of the charter members of the Point Isabel Yacht club, and is making arrangements to spend most of the summer at the Point. CANADA GRAIN FIELDS ON SHORTER RAIL LINE WINNIPEG, Anril 1.—(JP)—The Hudson's Bay railway, now being constructed by the Canadian gov eminent, will shorten effectively the distance between the grain fields of Western Canada and the mar kets of Europe. . From Saskatoon to Liverpool via the Great Lakes and St. Lawernce the distance of 4.878 miles, but by the new railroad to Churchill it is only 3.783 miles. It is 5.224 miles from Edmondton to Liverpool by wav of the St. Lawrence and only 4.182 miles by rail to Churchill. The shorter haul, and conse auently lower costs and quicker de livery. is expected to give Canadian wheat farmers an advantage in the world market. _ ... ..A LATIN TRADE MEET SUBJECT Development of Exports To Be Discussed By Conven tion At Baltimore BALTIMORE, April 1.—(JP)—Fur ther development of the export trade with Latin America will be the chief topic to confront the six teenth annual convention of the National Foreign Trade council. This convention will be here April 17-19 and is expected to attrace upwards of 2,000 delegates. The meeting will mark the first assembly of local foreign trade councils, export managers’ associa tions and similar groups. Steps will be taken toward national col laboration of these smaller organi zations. Merchandising sessions will be instituted and informal meetings will permit the presentation of economic problems confronting the exporter. One feature will be the demonstration of modern methods of international communication. Cable, telegraph, telephone, radio and wireless hookups will be ar ranged for actual demonstration before the delegates. James A. Farrell, president, in summoning delegates to the meet ing says: “The foreign trade of the United States for 1928 showed continual development,” he declares. “The value was more than $9,000,000,000. Manufactured products rose to 70 per cent of this total. Of the raw material, which comprises the oth er 30 per cent, cotton supplied two-thirds of the value. This de velopment of exported manufac tured goods is the outstanding fea ture of the year's trade.” PITTSBURGH EMPLOYES INSURE FOR HUGE SUM PITTSBURGH. Pa., April 1—(AP)— Westinghouse Electric and Manufac turing company reports that $33, 250.000 in insurance was being car ried for 35.500 employes at the end of 1928 under the free group insur ance plan. Under this plan each employ re ceives, without Dhysical examination a $500 policy after six months serv ice. By agreeing to deposit two per cent of his wages in a savings fund he receives an additional pol icy for $500 and this amount is in creased annually by $100 until a total of $2,000 has been reached. In addition to the free group in surance the company provides ‘con tributory insurance’ in which em ployes foot most of the bill.
