S. department of agri culture. At 140, the index is 3 points higher than March *15, 1928, and 14 points higher than in March two years ago. The advance of 4 points since February 15 is accounted for by a seasonal advance in the farm price of horses and mules, a shap advance in the price of hogs, moderate price advances of all other meat animals, corn, cotton, and aples, and slight advances in the farm price of wheat, flaxseed, hay, milk cows, butterfat, and chickens. The upturns in these commodities, however, were par tially offset by a seasonal decline in egg prices and minor declines in farm prices of oats, barley, potatoes and wool. Hog prices continued to advance from February 15 to March 15. At $10 per hundred pounds on March 15, the farm price was about 13 per cent higher than in February and nearly 34 per cent higher than in March of lqpt year. Higher farm prices of hogs have been due pri marily to the rapid falling off in re ceipts. Receipts at seven primary markets during the four-week period r ending March 16 were about 2 per cent smaller than during a similar period ending February T6 and ap proximately 32 per cent lower than receipts during the corresponding period last year. While hog prices were making sharp advances from February 15 to March 15, the farm price of com showed only a comparatively small r change. This resulted in consider able improvement Jn the feeding ratio, the com-hog ratio for the United States being 11.3 on March 15 as compared with 10.2 on Febru ary 15 and 8.7 a year ago. Com prices advanced about 2 per cent from February 15 to March 15. The farm price of potatoes de clined about 2 per cent from Febru ary 15 to March 15. Price declines of approximately $ per cent in north ern producing areas and 1 per cent in the South Central states were partly offset by a 5 per cent ad vance along the South Atlantic sea board. The average farm price in the Far West held steady on March 15 at the February figure. The farm k price advance in the Southeast was influenced by the new crop situation with apparent intentions to make a drastic cut in this year’s early po tato acreage. An increased movement of the 1928 crop from northern potato districts has apparently been the weakening influence in the price de cline for the country as a whole. -— - r r _ * Experience of Forty Years is Revealed In Gateway Bakery * The wholesale and retail service maintained in Brownsville by the Gateway Bakery, 834 Elizabeth street, reflects the experience and wisdom accumulated by Ed Pehrson in more than. 40 years spent as baker and bakery owner. He not only knows his business, but he is familiary with his territory, hav ing come to the Valley in 1912. His trade here is largely whole sale as he supplies bread and other bakery products to a large number of restaurants, stores and hotels. A retail service is maintained, however, at his Elizabeth street location. A specialty is made of the “Amer ican Maid’’ bread but a complete line of other products is baked each night. The “American Maid’’ loaves are baked from flour of the same name which Pehrson says is the highest grade white flour he has encountered in his long years as a baker. This flour is manu factured by a Texas concern with mills at Houston. Special wrappers and electrical equipment at the bakery insure a minimum of handling and a sani tary product. This bread Is par ticularly well adapted to toasting, Pehrson states, due to the even quality of the flour and the thor ough preparation of the dough by electrical machines. Whole wheat and rye loaves, pastery and rolls also are taken from the ovens each morning. Par kerhouse rolls are sold in large quantities and consequently they are given special attention. Indi vidual orders for birthday cakes, etc., are filled by the bakery. Pehrson inaugurated a program of betterments when he took over the business here a year ago. He has remodeled his quarters and added the latest devices In baking equipment. “Due to the use of high grade matterlals, first class bakers and the latest machinery. I now believe that my products compare favor ably with the best offered in the Valley,” Pehrson says. New Test Stations To Be Established By A. & M. College COLLEGE STATION. Tex., April 8.—(j«P>—Two additional water run off and soil erosion experimental stations are to be established in Texas, one near Temple for the blackland section, and one for the sandy soil section of East Texas, an nouncement from A. B. Conner, di rector of the Experiment Station, A. <fe M. College of Texas, disclosed. These new stations, to be modeled largely upon that at Supr, will fur nish facilities for cooperative ex periments to be conducted by the Experiment Station and the United States Department of Agriculture. The experiments in water run-off and soil erosion work at the Spur station in West Texas, have been conducted during the last three years by the Texas Agricultural Ex periment Station alone. INDUSTRIALISM ROUTS OLD FAMILY LAUNDRY NEW YORK. April 8.—(**)—'The old family laundry is disappearing and in its place, says a recent an nouncement by the National Laun dry Owners’ association, is rising an other billion dollar industry. The nation’s laundry bill in 1925 was $500,000,000 and the figure is expected to reach $1,000,000,000 be fore the end of next year. In New York City consolidations in the laundry business have already pro duced one concern with an annual gross income of almost $10,000,000. FIRM LETS SALESMEN CHOOSE OWN SALARY WASHINGTON. April 8.—(VP)—A paradise for salesmen, or what might be taken for one at first glance, is described in department of commerce reports from the orient concerning a rubber company which permits its agents to name their own salary. Suppose a man enter the employ of this concern. He is told to name his salary, the only condition being that if he fails to demonstrate by actual figures that he is worth it, he must resign. If he is an old em ploye, he is privileged to request a raise on the same basis. The com pany’s officials say that the plan has been a success. DIAMOND IMPORTS SHOWING DECLINES NEW YORK, April 8.—(/P)—Dia mond imports appear to follow their own economic law. Paradoxically thre flow of diamonds into the American market does not reflect various changes in the prosperity level. The imports for the past two years have been less than any year since 1921. In 1928 the United States bought $42,396,162 worth of cut diamonds abroad and $11,935, 191 worth of uncut stones. PROOF! CHICAGO.—Asked in court if she had proof of her husband’s means, Mrs. J. C.
