Stiles Makes Plea
For Preservation
Of Native Plants

SAN BENITO, Tex., April 9.—An
attack on the misnaming of native
plants and flowers and a plea for
the preservation of native trees and
plants featured the speech delivered
by Harvey Stiles, pioneer horticul
turist of this rgion, before the San
Benito Garden club Saturday after
noon. “It is criminal.” said Mr.
Stile*, “to let the heritage of this
part of the country be swept away
by inevitable development and.
when there is no native material
left, to send away for something
that is hard to grow and not nearly
as lovely or suitable as the native
types that were allowed to dis
appear.”
A plea for the preservation of the
cereus, a rare cactus that blooms at
night and one that is not to be
found anywhere else in the United
States, concluded Mr. Stiles’ talk.
BLIZARD AND HEAT WAVE
NEW YORK, April 9.—</P)—While
the Atlantic seaboard has been hav
ing a hot wave, there has been a
blizzard in Nevada, and California

textile workers idle at three addi
tional plants, in North Carolina.
A walk out yesterday at the Flor
ence Mills of Forest City, N. C-,
culminated last night in a mass S
meeting at which several hundred t
strikes voted to meet today and
prepare a slate of demands, to in
clude a 20 per cent wage increase.
Chick Fewster is a free agent and
is trying to hook on. The veteran |
infield has begun negotiations with
the Buffalo club.
