For this eason. man has Invented what he is pleased to call the white lie; a su gar coated falsehood devised to save ethers from unnecessary pain. To • day the white lie has standing in J the community. It has caste; it is 1 dignified and sensible. In every way, (it is a credit to those who employ it with tact and good grace. All of which ieads up to Richard Dix'S . latest starring picture, “Nothing * But the Truth.” a Paramount all talking comedy, based on the suc 1 cessful play of the same name. In “Nothing But the Truth." Dix. who has always used the white lie to advantage, suddenly finds him self forced to tell the truth for 24 consecutive hours. His dilemma is self-imposed, for he bets $10,000 that no matter what happens, he will tell the truth. This. . of course, leads to many embarras sing and complicated situations; all of which turn out to be exceedingly funnv. Dix learns soon euogh that this business of telling the truth not only is not easy, but really a dan gerous proceeding. Every conceiv able test is applied to poor Dix: even to the point of lasing the girl he hopes to marry. But he persists; a fact which gives this picture excep tional entertainment value. In his first talking picture, Dix Interprets a role especially suited to his talents. As the carefree, debon air. somewhat perplexed and dis couraged truth-teller, he gives what many consider to be his finist far clal characterization. An engaging comedy role is played bv Helen Kane, the star of the mu sical *'omcdy, “Good Boy.* now play ing on Broadway. One of the most popular songsters of the day. Miss Kane, who is a well known Victor recording artist, makes an auspici ous debut before the camera. Monday and Tuesday. : Movie Actor Holds Up Vaundeville Half Hour With Hot Act Those "Buddy” Rogers fans who think that their favorite’s abilities as an actor stop with his portrayals on the silver screen would have been pleasantly surprised had they seen him in a Los Angeles vodvil theater recently when he “stopped the show” for half an hour. After Rogers made a brief speech before the curtain, and bowed off. there was prolonged applause. The master of ceremonies protested at his quick departure and the audi ence responded to his words with more applause. "Buddy” returned. First with a friend, he played a piano duet. Then, successively, he played solos on the trombone, drums, saxophone, and trumpet, and topped it all by singing the | chorus of one of his tunes. The Rogers fans will be pleased to learn that in his next picture, an ell-talking production. “Buddy" repeats this demonstration of his versatility by playing the numerous instruments of his stage band as part of the plot of the story. The part is made to order for Rogers and it brings him forward through sound and screen to a big ger place in the hearts of those who have chosen him as their idol.
