Canada June 3—<JP The Royal bar. of Canada has com piled statistics showing that Can ada’s rate of increase in industrial activity since 1926 has been approx imately six times that of the United States. An index prepared by the domin ion bureau of statistics shows that Canada has increased her general volume of industrial production 12 per cent in the past two years, compared witn a rise of two per cent1 for the United States as announced by the federal reserve board. Separating industrial activity into , several principal divisions the bank's figures form a basis for these con clusions : Canada's steel production since 1926 has increased 58 per cent com- i pared with six per cent for the United States. Canada's generation of hvdro- j electric power has grown 49 per j cent compared with only 19 per cent in the United States. Canada's consumption of petro leum. during the same two-year pe riod has risen 50 per cent compared j with 16 per cent in the United' States. The bank ascribes the unusual de- ; velopment of steel production in! the dominion to extensive railroad j construction and new building. FORGING AHEAD RIO DE JANEIRO. June 1 -Jm Japan is forging ahead as a *s- ! temer of Brazil with two steamer lines giving direct service between the countries. In 1928 the oriental empire took 90.000 pounds of coffee. 40 000 pounds of sugar and 60.000 pounds of frozen meats. ‘Lemon’ Nets State $20,000,000 After Forced Purchase VIRGINIA. Minn, Jone Minnesota owes a debt of gritituda to a squatter who 38 years ago forced the state to take a "lemon" worth *40,000.000 or more. The squatter had settled on a 160 acre tract tn southern Minnesota wh*ch was a part of the federal government's school land grant to the state. Officials told the state that it would have to take instead 160 acres near here, or nothing at all. It was denounced generally as a bad deal for the state. Then, in 1891. iron ore was dis covered on the alternative tract, the Misaabe Mountain mine was launched, and the state treasury began receptiion of the largest flow of riches from anv single source in the commonwealth An inventory Just completed shows that the "lemon” has already paid more than 820.000.000 in royalties and faxes, and is only half ex hausted. It was only necessary to go a little below the grass roots to get at the ore and open pit mining is pos sible with rail tracks laid right into the 120-acre crater. Down in southern Minnesota the tract the state thought it was being cheated out of is now worth less than $20 000 LEAGUE STUDIES WAY TO REDUCE TARIFFS GENEVA. June 3.—(Jf)—The pos sibility of bringing about a reduc tion of customs tariffs by Joint and collective action is being exhaubtive ly studied by the league of nations. The particular commodities af fected are leather and leather wares, including shoes and gloves: also iron, steel, wood, fresh fruit and veeetables. Various members of the economic committee will consult competsnt authorities in their home countries and subsequently submit repoits to the league. I NEARTH WALL SEBASTOPOL. Russia.
