Burlegh Grimes and George l hie may be considered as threatening the major league record of 19 straight set by Rube Marquard. By JAY VESSELS j Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, June 8.——It's just loo bad for the clubs that have | to face George Uhle and Burleigh Grimes nowadays. And now that they survived the cold weather and have reached the correct pitching temperature it looks like a long dismal tummer for the ambitious batsmen prowling about the National and American ! leagues With weather that doesn't requ.re extra flannels to get up pttchme ; steam prevailing. George and Bur-! leigh can start shooting any rme now at the record of 19 consecutive triumphs set by George Marquerd. Uhle stowed away his first nine games, w hile Grimes rark-’d up eight games in a row Both had zero rat-' mgs in their loss columns. This was the situation June 1. Grimes missed his ninth straight win by a hair. He tossed the clos ing 3 1-3 inn.ngs in a recent Pirate triumph. The victory officially was credited to the man Grimes relieved, but this decision was so close that the burly buccaneer may get the credit yet. There has been nothing soft about! the streaks oi the Detroit and Pitts burgh sharpshooters. They have been been beating the strong teams j as well as the weak ones. Just half of Grimes’ eight victories came against the Cubs, a senior circuit j pennant tavorite. Of Uhle’s string ! of nine, three were registered against the Browns, a team that has been up there all season. P.tchmg for fighting clubs. Grimes and Uliic have not exactly been at a disadvantage. The Pi rates. engaged in a spurt to the top. played great ball behind Burleigh And the Tigers' heavy hitting has been equally helpful to Uhle in his drive to new fame. Burleigh, with 12 National league reasons behind him. and Uhle. a veteran of 10 American league cam paigns, are perfect pitching speci mens. They have memorized the weaknesses of the batters they have to face and they have the ability and courage to stay in the box and pitch that ball where it will suffer the least damage.
