CONTROVERSY COMES TO END Motion To Reprimand Is Turned Down; Vote Favors Him 80-37 • - - AUSTIN. June 28—<7T>—The long Controversy involving J. T Robison commissioner of the general land office, doubtless was at an end to day. following action of the hoiMr of representatives last night in dis missing impeachment chargrs. The house voted down proposals to censure and reprimand, voted direct on the motion to dismiss charges. The motion to free the .•eteran official of charges carried i vote of 80 to 37 Action came after a day of argu ment by attorneys. Vote was on the resolution by Representative Coke R. Stevenson of Junction, proposed Wednesday but amended to preclude action until attorneys had argued the testimony. Representative A. P. Johnson of Carrizo Springs and others offered a resolution to censure and repri mand. and Representative Olan Van Zandt of Tioga and others proposed that articles of impeachment be drawn and filed with the senate. These resolutions were defeated. 83 to 30. and 77 to 344, respectively. Regan Jane 13 Hearing on the impeachment charges, which had been proposed by Representative Grady Woodruff of Decatur, had begun June 13 and had continued intermittently since. Charges were filed as a sequel to an investigation of the land office conducted by a joint legislative committee during the regular ses sion last January. The committee filed a report with the house during the closing days of thp first called ''•ssion. reprimanded Mr. Robison I I for his apparent carelessness in not keeping an accurate account of the expenditures from the one cent an acre reapnratsement fund contrib uted by land owners to pay expenses 1 of revaluing state lands and recom mended that the attorney general file suit for an accounting of the fund. The controversy began last De cember. when an effort was made by the governor, attorney general ; and members of the board of re gents of the University of Texas to get Mr. Robison's consent to post ponement of sale of oil and gas rights in university lands until the legislature, meeting January 8. could have a chance to reneal the leasing law and take the lands from the market. Mr. Robison had adver tised 1.500.000 acres for lease during January. Agreed to Postpone He agreed to postpone sales of all acreage except 53.000 acres of the ’and he had advertised for sale on January 2. He claimed he had re ceived specific requests for tracts comprising the 53.000 acres and that under a decision of the supreme court the law mad** it mandatory upon him to advertise the lands. The regents obtained an in June- j tion restraining the sale, but later; it was dissolved, and the rase Is now ; on appeal to the supreme court. When the legislature met. it im mediately repealed the leasing law and a concurrent resolution was! passed proposing legislative investi- f gation of the general hand office, governor, attorney general and board of regents with reference to the controversy. SOLONS MUST PLEASE MOODY Two Finishing Touches On Bills Needed or New Session Looms AUSTIN, June 28 — i&) —This 1 legislature has two important pieces of business to transact to the liking of Oovemor Moody with in the remaining four days if it expects to be permitted to go home next Tuesday when the second spe cial session ends. It has to put finishing touches on the appropriation bills and sandpaper them down to not ex ceed approximately $50,000,000. To do this, the senate will be obliged to do considerable conceding to the house, for there are about $5,000. 000 difference between them on the educational measure, the only one that has not been agreed to. As a matter of compromise the ■ senate has agreed to reduce its $21,000,000 bill to $17,000,000. but the house wants it to come down to $16,500,000. about $500,000 in ex cess of the house bill. At that, apnropriations for the biennium will exceed the available revenue by $750,000 according to John F. Wal The Mark of Genuine Aspirin 1JAYER ASPIRIN is like an ole friend, tried and trno. Provisions for the highway de partment's construction program necessitate an increased gas tax. It is contended. The house has past ed a four cent tax. The senate com mittee reduced it to three rents, but now there Is a movement on in the upper house to enact a combination bill, fixing the gas tax at four cents and reducing registration fees on automobiles. The house had passed a bill reducing fees on j privately owned passenger automo biles to 30 per cent. Unless the appropriations are brought within the revenue of the state and highway needs adequately provided for it is likely the gover nor will convene the legislature im mediately in a third called session WALTON HOOD GETS GOOD SIZED TARPON (Special to The Herald* HARLINGEN, June 28—A six foot tarpon, snagged by Walton Hood, former commander of the American Legion of Texas, and now a resident of Harlingen, was on dis play here Thursday.
