OIL BARON IS ' 90 YEARS OLD Birthday Marks Third De cade of Retirement As Invalid TARRYTOWN, N. Y., July 8.—f/P) —John D. Rockefeller master of the fine art of living, celebrated his ninetieth birthday anniversary to day. Observance of the day brought little deviation from the daily rout ine by which the veteran oil mag nate has learned to be healthy and happy. The day marks the close of the third decade since, having amassed $1,000,000,000 Mr. Rockefeller re linquished his business interests to his son and began his pursuit of health and happiness. In those 30 years he has evolved a philosophy of life based on mod eration and quiet activity so that where at 60 he was a semi-invalid, seeking a diet that would agree with him, today he announced he was in perfect health, scanning the future with cheer and hope. In a statement he said: “I have every reason to be grate ful on my ninetieth birthday. Every body has been so kind and good to me all the year. With perfect health and full of hope and cheer for the future, I have nothing but kindness and good wil for everybody.” His birthday was spent with mem bers of his family at his estate, Po cantico Hills. SECOND PARLEY FOR CHURCHES SCHEDULED BASLE. Switzerland. July 8.—UP)— A movement begun several years ago for relief of Protestant churches in war torn Europe will be ad vanced further at the second “Beth esda conference” here August 23 24. Following the world conflict. Prot estant churches of Europe were im poverished and disorganized.' The Swiss Protectant federation, at the suggestion of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in Ameri ca. called a conference for their re .lief at the Bethesda house in Copen hagen. From that meeting, with 75 rep resentatives of 37 religious bodies and 21 countries attending, grew the Central Bureau of Relief of the Evangelical Churches of Europe. An American office was opened in Newr York, with Dr. Chauncey W. Good rich in charge. The Rev. Kenneth D. Miller succeeded Dr. Goodrich in 1925. One great problem facing the con ference this year is the question of sustenation. The churchmen hope to find a plan that will not leave the churches unprepared in event of another crisis. July 8.— UPS—Struggles through swamp and thicket in search of a hundred flowers is the program occupying the minds of six Smith college girls this summer. Botany 24, Summer Field Work is the name of the course, a study unusual in a college of this type, At first hearing, the collection of a hundred different flowers sounds simple. But Prof. Wayne Manning is positive that it is anything but i The flowers must be identified, pressed and mounted. An exarama tion on them must be taken by the candidate in the fall. ( She is not left wholly to her own resources, however, for she has special instruction du:'ng three or four weeks in the spring. If she succeeds in bringing back the hun dred flowers she receives one full year hour of credit. It is an ideal system, according to the botany department. As the student is alone she is obliged to solve her own problems and there by develops resources and sagacity. Moreover, she is gaining practical training which will prove invalua ble in any advanced course in bot any she may elect. COURT-AT-LAW JURY DISMISSED MONDAY The jury in Cameron County Court at law was called in Monday morning before Judge J. I. Kleiber and finding no business at hand, it was dismissed for the week.
