Dangers from the passage of the Box immigration bill were char acterized as more important to the Valley's welfare than any other is sue new under discussion by Col. Sam Robertson in a talk before the Rotary club here Wednesday. “There are now 30,000 deportable Mexicans in the Valley who would be driven out under the Box bill." he declared. “If these are deported, who is to gather the crops, and supply the labor necessary for further development. These work ers have made the Valley what it is now. and are absolutely necessary for Its continued growth." Economic Danger Discounting the injustice of de porting these builders of Valley prosperity, he called attention to the economic danger, and urged the necessity of some action being taken to prevent the passage of the bill, which he denounced as the out growth of misunderstanding of con ditions between the two republics, and the immigration situation along the border. The plea that the Jobs would be left for American labor he discarded with reminders of pre vious experiences with the type o? labor which has been coming into the Valiev from the north. Judge W. H Ward of Houston, a guest of thp club, urged continued i to efforts to procure a deep water port, regardless of the exact loca tion. citing Houston's experience of development all along the ship channel as showing the value of such a project to the entire locality. Choice of a club nominee for the title of "most distinguished citizen" in the legion contest was not made, on the recommendation of the board of directors. Insufficient time to make a fair and accurate estimate of achievements on which to base such a selection was given as the reason for the action. Committees Appointed Wm. S. West, recently elected president nf the club, appointed committees for the year, and gave a short talk on duties of the Ro tarians. and possible activities for the future, emphasizing boys’ work, and possibilities for international work with the Matamoros Rotary. Officers, directors and committees for the vear include: officers: Soresident. Wm. S. West; vice pres ident. Herbert Weinert; secretary. Matt 'Love; treasurer. A. Wayn« Wood: recording secretary.
