Warring hosts against the Mediter
ranean fruit fly are advancing to
attack the enemy on Its own terri
tory—countries bordering the Med
iterranean sea.
The motor yacht Utowana has
left with Allison V. Armour, weal
thy New York patron of science
and collaborator of the department
of agriculture, and Prof. H. J.
Quayle. University of California
entomologist as leaders In the at
' tack.
The boat, affording rapid move
ment. is equipped on board for
scientific study of collected mate
rial. A brief survey of the fruit
fly situation will be made in the
Bermudas and the Azores, with the
main work to be carried on in the
important citrus area on the Medi
terranean coast.
The brunt of the attack will be
carried by Valencia, Spain, after
which other Mediterranean areas
will be taken up in succession with
stops at important points.
Study is expected to occupy the
remainder of 1939. and during the
winter months Professor Quayle
may carry the work to South Africa
to cover fruit fly economics and
behavior during the fruit harvest
ing months of January, February
and March.
