Mayfield, former United States Senator from Texas will deliver the dedicatory address on the oc casion of the dedication of the Mission Junior School on the eve ning of April 9 a: 8 o’clock. March 31—A total of 833 cars of produce has moved from McAllen over the Missouri Pacific and Soutnern Pacific rail ways during the present shipping season, according to shipping rec ords of the carriers. The total is more than 100 car loads ahead of the mark reached by the shipments at the same time last year and is expected to far surpass the 1929 total. The entire Valley has thus far shipped a total of 14,281 cars of produce this season, surpassing by far the total set in 1929. SCHOOLS STAGE CLOSE CONTEST Pharr - San Juan Winners Of Hidalgo County Debating Teams ‘Special to The Herald) PHARR. March 31—The Pharr San Juan high school boys debating team won the county championship In the contest held Friday night, according to N. W. Gay of Merced es, who is county director of the event. The team is composed of Billy Goldberg and Victor Kormicr who previous to the finals had won four out of the five preliminary de bates in the “round robin-’ method of elimination. The girls debating contest was won by Weslaco high school debating team and Missioi took second place as was true oi the boys contest. The subject for debate was the Sterling plan of fi nancing Texas highways and was very ably handled by the high school debaters. The declamation contests were held on Friday night with the Mis sion senior boy declaimer winning first place and the Pharr-San Juan entrant awarded third place. Ed inburg took first place in the senior girls contest and the Pharr-San Juan girl won second place. In the music memory contest Hi dalgo took first place, Edinburg sec ond. and Pharr-San Juan was giv en third place. In picture memory Pharr-San Juan with twenty-two entries as a team had as many one hundred per cent papers and was •warded first place. The tennis finals were played off Friday and Saturday with the girls playing at Pharr-San Juan courts and the boys held their finals at the Edinburg high school court.-. In the girls singles Edinburg won first place and Donna took second In the girls doubles the Pha/r-San Juan team won the contest and Weslaco and Edinburg are playing for second place. March 31—With both sides confident of victory and the political pot here boiling, one of the largest votes ever recorded in a city election is scheduled to go to the polls Tuesday when a mayor, three eouncilmen and a city marshall are to be elected for Mercedes. The total number of voters is estimated at 850. including poll taxpayers and citizens who arc exempt for various reasons. The campaign has intensified dur ing the past week, with a ma3s meeting being called for Monday night at the city park by the' Kascy ticket. E. H. Kasey Is candidate for may or. opposing J. E. Haynes, the pres ent mayor, who has held the posi tion for eight years. W. W. Ander- i son and C. E. Blankinship are seek ing reelection for eouncilmen, also H T. Tidmcre and . Death Claims Second Victim of Accident Death of W. W. Martin, 42, in I Dallas Sunday brought the toll of an automobile crash on t lie Harlin gen highway last week to two, Richard Boyd Hill succumbin': to injuries in Valley Baptist hospital shortly after the accident. Martin was a salesman for the National Portland Cement com pany and Hill, with headquarters in Dallas, was an official. Their au tomobile collided with a truck on the slippery pavement between Harlingen ar.d La Feria. Charges of negligent homicide were sworn out here Saturday aft ernoon before Justicp B. L. Cain against Henry Timokin and John Cheshire as a result of the crash. Cheshire's car was parked be side the road, and both the truck driven by Timpkins and Hill's au tomobile swerved around it and met in collision. Man’s Daughter and Wife Contest Estate WACO. March 31—(tP)—A trial In which the insurance and prop erty of A. P. McCormick, shot to death in his home in Dallas last Sept. 29. were contested by his wife. Mrs. Marjorie McCormick, and his daughter by a former marriage. Miss Adelaide McCormick, 13. was on the docket for commencement here today. Both filed claims with the South western Life Insurance company for $3,000 in insurance. The daugh ter also asked for $10,000 of her father's estate. March 31—{/P)— Investigators today had their first tangible clue with which to work in solving the slaying of three persons whose bodies have been found in the Pecos river near Fort Stockton within the last two months Photographs of a man whose nude body was found last Tuesday In the Pecos river havp been Identi fied by several persons here as H. M. Polan, of Plentywood, Montana, who was in For; Worth from February 18 to March 11. Deputy Sheriff H. W. Rhodes announced the identification yesterday. The man had been shot twice. Several weeks previously, the bod.es of a woman and a girl were taken from the Pecos half a mile from the spot where the man's body was found.
