A. Outlaw is president, Mrs. R. E. McBride, vice president; Mrs. F W. Markussen, secretary, treasurer. Class members have presented a sterling silver bud vase to Mrs. M. J. Love, retired president of the class. • • • Leave for Meet At Del Rio Mrs. D. P. Gay Jr., Mrs. Pearl Nuckols and Mrs. Emil Blanck left Monday for Del Rio to attend the Fifth District Federation meeting. They were expecting to bt Joined i ,by Mrs. I. C. Initiates ,Three Candidates Three candidates were initiated at last night’s meeting of Browns ville Hope chapter O. E. S. and cer emonies were followed by a social hour and refreshments. Several out-of-town visitors enjoyed the j * evening, and the hall was made i beautiful for the occasion with abundant decorations of flowers. • • • Auxiliary Hears Reports Reports of the West Texas Pres bytery held last aeek in San An- i tonlo were giver, by Mrs. G. W. Moothart and Mrs. Howard Cum mins at yesterday’s session of the Presbyterian Auxiliary. The meet ing was preceded by an executive board conference during which sev- | eral business matters received at tention. Other business reports were made at the main gathering of the body. A large attendance was present and j Mrs. Gardner led devotlouals. • • • Routine Business At Society Meet Routine business matters occupied attention of members of the Altar Society of th; Sacred Heart church at its Monday meeting at the home of Mrs. John Closner. The subject for the afternoon was •Vifteenth Century Painters." Deaconess Bickford gave a dis cussion on “Masaccio and His Life Work". Mrs. A. N. Brown had for her subject "Fra Angelico". Mrs. L. Donnelly. “Fra Liopo Lippi", and Mrs H. E. Hager. “Browning’s Pippo Lippi." After the program. Mrs. Roe Served a refreshment course during a social half hour. She used a eoler j scheme of green and orchid with a delightful effect. • • • | PARTY GIVEN ON first BIRTHDAY Mrs C. R Sandtn entertained with a delightful children’s partv. the latter part of the week, in honor of the first birthday of her little daughter Gloria Gene. Many games were Dlaved and also a contest in which Emma Jane Breedlove won the prize. At the close of the afternoon, the birthdav cake was cut and served with the refreshment course. HOISE GFESTS IS HONORED Mr. and Mrs Joe Brown enter tained at dinner and evening during the past week for their house guest. Miss I. Goodman, of Laredo. Hal Fraser of San Benito, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins of this city. • * * POPPIES ORDERED FOR SALE Mrs. Weslev Kramer, president, presided at the business session of the regular meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Friday night, held at the Legion Club, at which time there was a good attendance. The Auxiliary has ordered more than a thousand poppies for their poppy sale in May, in observance of Memorial and Armistice days. These poppies are. being made in Texas, last year being the first year they have been made in the state. They are made in the hospitals of Kerr ville by the soldiers. They are packed one hundred in a box and dry steril ized before being sent out. The sol diers receive one cent for each poppy they make. • • ' NEW ORGANIZATION MEETS FRIDAY The Firemen's Auxiliary, composed of wives of local firemen, and a recently organized body, met Friday afternoon at the city hall, with Mrs. R. R. Talbert, president, presiding. The Jim of the organization is to assist the firemen in every way possible. The first undertaking will be to put drapes and curtains in the firemen’s dormitory at the city hall where a number of firemen have quarters. Mrs. Talbert, assisted by Mrs. Fred Johnson and Mrs. Herman Barbee, from a committee to take care of this work. A rummage sale is planned for next Saturday and a box supper, in the near future. The Auxiliary acknowledges a gift of $10 from the firempn at this meeting. • • • DELEGATES ELECTED VICE-PRESIDENT Mrs. J. N. Pace. Mrs A. K. Phil lips, Mrs. T. H. Pollard. Mrs. H. E. Bennett and Mrs. Leland Matthews returned at the week-end from San Antonio, where they attended the state Presbytery. These ladies repre sented the local Woman's Auxiliary of the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Phillips and Mrs. Matthews being the reporting delegates Mrs. Pollard had the honor of being elected vice-president of the Presbvterv at an election of officers held at this convention the 1, 2 and 3 of April. • « • COUNCIL PLANS PAGEANT Mrs. Ge orge Morrison. Mrs. El bert Crockett and Mrs. Wesley Kra mer. members of the Just We Neigh bors club, and Mrs. H. T. Settles and Mrs. Leroy Sigler, of the Alter nate Wednesday club, both home demonstration clubs of Mrecedes. at tended a meeting of the Council of the home demonstration clubs of Hidalgo County held at McAllen Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Morrison is president of the council and presided at this time. The council is planning, among many other things, the staging of an agricultural pageant in the near future, showing the develonment along that line, in the Rio Grande Valiev, from its infancy to the pres ent time. The pageant is to be staffed in the Legion Park at McAllen. The pro ceeds are to be used in purchasing prizes to be awarded next month In contests that are to be staged among the home demonstration clubs of Hidalgo County Scholar ships to the A. k M. short course will be awarded the winners of these prizes. • • • PERSONALS Mrs. W. E. McDonnell left at the week-end for Florida. She will meet Mr. McDonnell in Pensacola, and they will take a trip through the state before going to their home at West Palm Beach where Mr. Mc Donnell is agriculturist for the Brown company. Mrs. J. C. Jones and baby son. John, and Miss Lola Sorrick, mot ored to San Antonio this week for a stay of several days. From there. Miss Scrrick, who has spent several months here in the Jones home, returned to her home in Long Beach. Calif. Mrs. Jones was ac companied home by her mother. Mrs. G. C. Sorrick. Mrs. Eric Green and son. Jack, have returned from San Antonio, where they visited Mrs. Green's sis ter. Mrs. A. C. Snodgrass, and Abilene, where Mrs. Green attended the Odd Fellows Grand Lodge, as a delegate from the local Rebekah lodge She was accompanied home by Miss Edwina Elfler of San An tonio, who will visit here in the Green home, and also in the home of relatives in Edinburg. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Murray and family are moving to Harlingen soon. Mrs. W. F. Galloway returned Thursday night from Vaiden, Miss., having been there during the illness and death of her father. J. M. Robert, have returned from an overland trip to San Antonio and Austin. In Austin they visited their daughter, Miss Mary Lee Kern, a student at the state university. Miss Verna Bee Allen of Harlin gen. spent several days of the past week here, a guest of Miss Gladys Hampton. Mrs. I. Goodman of Laredo, was a visitor here this past week in the homes of Mrs. Joe Brown and Mrs. Jack Hawkins. Mrs. Art Tolson and daughter, Effie Gene, left this week for Amarillo, where they will spend a month visiting Mrs Tol son’s sister. Mrs. Effie Jewell Shekell. Mrs. Jack Hawkins left the latter part of the week for San Antonio. where she is visiting her sister, Mrs. L. H. Masely. She expects to remain In that city until after the Battle of Flowers celebration. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Johnson and daughters, Jacqueline and Peggy, spent this week-end in San Antonio. Mrs. Ethel B. Fink of San Beni to, was a guest here of Mrs. H. E. Seigg, during the past week. Mrs. A. A. Manpln has returned to her home in Oklahoma City, after an extended visit here in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Olson. .Mr. and Mrs. Perry Perkins have returned to the Valley. Mrs. Perk ins has been visiting in San Anto nio, while Mr. Perkins made a busi ness trip to Chicago. Mrs. John Herndon and children, Sara Ellen and John. Jr., and her mother. Mrs. F. H. Bass, left this week for Houston. Mrs. Bass, who has been spending the winter here in the Herndon home, will remain at her home in Houston, and Mrs. Herndon and children will be her guests for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Holland have as their guests this week, Mrs. Dorothy Stanley of Liverpool, Eng land. Miss Vera Brown of Mathis. Texas, and Dorothy Holland, who Is attending school at Kingsville. Death of Children Unknown to Father JERMYN. Jack County. April S— •A*}—A bereaved mother today sought the father of her three chil dren to tell him his sons were burned to death yesterday In a fire which destroyed their farm home, near here. The father, Henry Van Worth, left home about a month ago. His whereabouts were unknown. Yes terday the mother went to a neigh bors to borrow some milk for the smallest. Just four months old. She returned to find her house flaming and the bodies of her children char red beyond recognition. Bernie Ray, 4. James. 18 months, and Donald Lee. the baby, were buried a few hours after their bodies were carried from the smok ing ruins.
