DEATH CAUSE
Murder and Suicide of Two
Women Startle
Art Colony
LAGUNA BEACH, Cal., April 25
fJP)—Jeatousy over aortal position
was blamed by author!tie* here to
day for the murder of Mrs. Doris
Murray Palmer, an artist formerly
of Chicago, and the suicide of Mrs.
Guy Bates Post, erstwhile musical
comedy star and divorced wife of
the noted actor.
The bodies of the two women,
reputed to have been “wry close
friends." were found in Mrs. Palm
er’s bungalow here yesterday.
Mrs. Palmer, known as an artist
and designer of scenery for the
Laguna Beach playhouse, had been
shot in the beck. Mrs. Post’s body,
with a bullet through the mouth
and brain, was found lying on a
revolver, in which two exploded
shells were discovered.
Mrs. Post, known on the stage
as Adele Ritchie, was seen moving
about the Palmer house an hour
before the bodies were found. Mrs.
Palmer was believed to have been
slain early in the afternoon, within
15 minutes of the time Mrs Fran
cis Berie, socially prominent here,
had delivered an invitation to a
luncheon that excluded Mrs. Post.
Jealousy
Sheriff San Jemlgan said he be
lieved the Invitation fanned the
jealousy between the two women
into a frenzy that caused Mrs. Post
to shoot Mrs. Palmer and then
trim the pistol on herself.
Mrs. Post last year was director
of the annual Boy Scout benefit
play at the playhouse here, spon
sored by Harold McCormick, multi
millionaire son of the late harvest
er magnate of Chicago. Cyrus H.
McCornik'k This year Mrs. Palmer,
because yhe designed the sets, was
given the honor.
The change in director*, their
friends said, caused them to quar
rel. Authorities said that when
Mrs. Palmer was supervising a dress
rehearsal /)f the play. Mrs. Post
was heard tb sav. ‘Td like to Shoot
her."
The play was to have opened last
night, hit the tragedy caused the
theater to remain dark.
Shot Through Back
Mrs. Palmer was Shot through
the back, and It was not known
whether she was taken unawares.
The bodies were found by Vemer
Rush and Mrs Kenneth Browne,
who had gone to the Palmer home
to return Mrs. Palmer’s pet dog
that had been missing for several
days.
Mrs. Post, was 3G years oM. She
marred the actor in 191S after a
brilliant career on the stage. PWir

Mrs Palmer, the former Doris

years old and formerly was th'*
wife of Dr. Clinton Poster Palmer
of Chicago. Both women were pro
minent in the fashionable artists'
colony here.
Mrs. Palmer had lived here more
than two y**ars. and Mrs. Post came
to La&una Beach shortly after the
divorce to live with her mother In
a luxurious home on Sunset Hill.
Wrong .Dog Tags
Warning against the use of 1929
dog tags was ist ued by the police
department Thursday.
Officers state they have found
Instances where dogs were vaccinat
ed this year but have been given
1929 tags.
They urge dog-owners to be cer
tain that they get 1930 tags from the
physician who does the vaccinating. I
Harlingen Chamber
Plans for Luncheons
(Special to The Herald.*
HARLINGEN, April 25— Short
and snappy luncheons once each
month to which the public will be
invited are planned by the Har
lingen Chamber of Commerce. The
first one will be held on May 1.
The object of the gatherings is
to acquaint the people of the city
with the plana and accomplishment*
of the chamber of commerce and
to allow them to get anything off
their chests they want to.
One limitation, however, it was
announced, will be the strictly en
forced—that is against long-winded
speeches. Any one who speaks more
than three minutes will be ruled
out of order.
The organization hopes and be
lieves the meeting, not only will
be well attended, but that much
good for the progress of Harlingen
will result from this added oppor
tunity to citizens to know more and
talk more-about their city.
Meetings of the chamber of ;om
merce directors always have been
open to the public. But the reg
ular meeting time, at 7:15 o’clock
each Wednesday night, it is be
lieved more Inconvenient than the
noon hour.
Vet Compensation
Bill Goes to Senate
WASHINGTON. April 25.—(JPh
Much amended and attended by
predictions of a presidential veto,
the Johnson, or "Rannkin’, bill to
extend and increase veterans' com
pensation was turned over to the
Senate today by the house.
The measure was approved by the
latter branch of congress fast night
after its author. Chairman Johnson
of the Veterans Committee, had
sought unsuccessfully to have it
recommitted because of the many
amendments that had been writ
ten into the measure.
The principal change In the vet
erans compensation laws that would
be effected by the measure is an
extension until January 1. 1930, of
the time limit on disabilities en
titled to compensation. As passed by
the house, veterans would receive
financial aid from the government
for all disabilities incurred up until
that time.
Mission Schools In
Excellent Condition

MISSION. April 25—Schools here
are tn good condition. A repor*
shows there are 1186 students en
rolled. distributed as follows: Sen
ior high school. 140; Junior high
school 256; Wilson school 208;
Roosevelt school. 582. During the
past six weeks there was but one
tardy with attendance at 9618 per
cent.
In the senior high school 228
per cent of the seniors were on the
honor roll; as were 13.5 per cent
of the Juniors and 17.7 per cent
of the sophomores.

of Valley vegetable crops and the
virtual assurance that It will con
tinue throughout the esason gen
erally is contributed to a large ex
tent by growers here and elsewhere
in the Valley to the efforts of the
Rio Grand Valley, Inc.
Meeting here Thursday for the
first time since their charter for

City Government To
Be Installed May S

SAN BENITO, April 25—Plans
were begun Friday for the regular
monthly meeting of the chamber of
commerce on May 5 at which the
new board of city government will
be Installed. Asa A. Agar is the
only old member of the board who
was re-elected. Those who 'win
serve with him are: B. A. Epstein,
J. A.* Welch, J. Lee Hanchey. J. Scott
Brown, ML J. Dodson and A. P.
Powell. The directors who are re
tiring are John T. Lomax, president,
F. S. Robertson and L. L. Zenor,
vice presidents; E H. Downs. J. B.
Symonds, A. L. Harris.
Ice Plant

RIO HONDO, April 25—Founda
tion^ for the large toe factory and
cold’storrage plant, to be known as
the Rio Hando Ice Factory-, has
been laid.
The structure is to be of white
brick and tile. Chas. L. McClaskey
is the contractor in charge.

being installed Thursday morning
preparatory to the official opening
of the company's office here, which
will occur soon, according to A. W.
