The BROWNSVILLE HERALD SPORTS SECTION Schmeling Making Use of Under-Dog Psychology GERMAN DOES NO WORRYING Teuton Dempsey Certain He j Can Land on Sharkey With His Right BY EDWARD J. NEIL. Associated Press Sports Writer ENDICOTT, N. Y., Jura 5—(A»)— Max Sigfrid Adolph Otto Schmel ean engaging young man with complex. inhibition or sign of y temperament to his lengthy \ name As he sits in the living room of his well-guarded cottage, playing over and over German phonograph re cords, he doesn't even talk a goer fight. Yet one week from tomorrow night in the Yankee Stadium, this 24-year-old Teuton who has scaled the heavyweight heights in two short years will battle Jack Shar key for the highest prize Fistiana has to offer. He will fight the best he knows how, canniiy, carefully, evenly but at a terrific pace, and if his best is not enough — well, he is still 24 years old and life even in a fistic sense still leads long be fore him. Max may lose to a better man. He frankly admits that may happen, but he doesn't think that man is Sharkey. In Condition Colored an Indian brown by the sun in his outdoor workouts, the young German is a picture of superb condition as he lolls in his easy chair, happy to talk of fights In * his halting English liberally sprink led with German phrases when the subject gets too complicated and thoughts come too fast. His high cheek bones, shaggy black eye brows, deep color, and animation leave an Indelible impression of Jack Demp aey when the old man-mauler weighed 187 pounds and was eager !to tear the world apart with his Iron fists. ”1 hope I beat Sharkey.'’ he said with a smile and a wave of both Rands. “I do not know. No one knows. If I get my chance, I win. 1 If not I lose.” To Schmeling. almost a fatalist No Dandruff? i Scratch Your Scalp and See Rinse dandruff away ma you wash your hair. ‘ Fitch's Shampoo dis solves every bit of dan druff, grease and I grime instantly. Sold with money-back guarantee. i j, MfioRWf uttovfR Qhfunpco j ! in his attitude toward the coming contest for ringdom's highest stakes, this statement covers the entire sit uation. By “chance,” which he pro nounces •'shenks,” Schmeling means the opening or situation that will give him the upper hand and pave the way to victory. The breaks may come his way — or they may go to Sharkey. His Reasoning ‘ If Sharkey wins, I congratulate him. The same way I would con gratulate myself if I win. But why should I lose?” he asked. “Sharkey is a good boxer, yes? He hits, punches good with his left hand, no; well, maybe it make him discouraged if he can't hit me with his best punch. That is important. “I do not know how I fight Shar key. In my training camp I have twenty sparring partners. I fight them all. They have different styles. No matter what style Sharkey fights. I am ready for him. “Sharkey is a good boxer. y\*? They say I can't hit a good boxer with my right hand. They say he will defend against my right all the time with his left and I never hit him. That is foolishness. “He must punch at me sometime, no? When he punch at me he moves his hand#, yes? When he does that he leaves an opening, nicht wahr? Then I can punch. Then I will hurt Sharkey. Maybe my shenks come then. “Only have I seen Sharkey box in a gymnasium and then he — what you call it — clown around with his sparring partners. Even so I know he is good fighter. But maybe I am a better fighter. Who knows?” Demonstrates By this time the even tempered, unexcltable German was on his feet, waving his hands, showing how he would move his head to evade a left to counter with his famous right hand that knocked out Johnny Rls ko and battered Paulino Uzcudun into helplessness. “There is another thing. Sharkey, he say. “How will Schmeling feel fighting a man like me who has met everyone and licked the men I have?” I tell you. “I will feel better about it than Sharkey. He is the American fighting before his own countrymen to keep the title in this country. He is getting old. He has missed two shenks to fight for the champion ship. Maybe he will not get another. • But me it is different. I am the ioreigner. the under-dog. I am 24 years old If I lose I fight again some other time for the champion ship. I have nothing to worry about. He has everything. M3ybe that does not bother him. no?” FIGHTS LAST NIGHT 'By the Associated Fress) NEW YORK—Tony Canzoneri, New York, outpointed Joe Glick, New York. Associated Press Sports Writer Any baseball unit that can come to life when its lead is threatened and win 13 out of its next 15 games, mostly against its toughest opposi tion. usually can pick up the mar bles. That, through yesterday, was what the Wichita Falls Epudders had done, and the odds today that they would be leading the Texas League parade on June 24, the day when the season probably will be split, were about any figure you cared to mention. Chances of heading Carl Williams’ cluggers off were more than remote. By slaughtering the Beaumont Ex porters in a double bill yesterday 6 tot 4. and 14 to 1, the leaders stretched their advantage over the field to five full games. Homers played a vital part in the Spudder victories. The first bout was won in the eighth, when Bet tencourt and Euller each slapped one out of the lot with a man on base. There were four more circuit wallops in the nightcap, one each by Storti, Burns. Levey and Betten court. Buffs Jolted The Buffs, who started their present hegira with high hopes, re ceived another Jolt when the Dallas Steers made it two straight. 6 to 5. in a 10-inning tussle. It marked the first time in over a month that the Mavs were on the long end two days in a row-. Claude Robertson, veteran 8teer maskman, tied the count in the last of the ninth with a freak homer that bounded over the left field fence, scoring a run ner ahead of him. Selph’s boot of Gene Moore’s hard grounder let the winning run across in the extra frame. Art Phelan’s Shreveport nine lost an opportunity to tie Houston for runner-up when San Antonio took the second game of their series, 5 to 2. Jim Chaplin pitched another fine game for the Indians, allow ing only eight hits, one of them a hcmer by Perry’, while the tribe knocked Tiny Owens from the hill in the fifth. Joe Bonowitz slugged the Panthers to their second stralzht over Waco. 10 to 7. His homer with two on baso and his single with the sacks lead ed accounted for six runs off Beck er and Thurman, two Cub unfor tunates. Lil Stoner, who previously had won three starts for the Cats, was driven from the slab in the sixth. Pelicans Grab Lead In Southern League ATLANTA. Ga., June 5.—(.P)—The lead of the Southern Association was in the hands of New Orleans today with a full game gap between the Pelicans of Memphis by virtue of the former’s win over the Chicks yesterday 8-2. The rejuvenated crackers kept their winning streak going by de feating Birmingham again in a ten inning affair 8-6. Jimmy Moore led the Little Rock Travelers to a victory over Mobile 7-2. Although he gave up nine safe ties. he was never in grave danger. Poole, Partridge and head, poled out homers for Nashville and the Vols outhit Chattanooga 12 to 11, but a four bigger by Treadaway in the fifth with the bags filled gave the Lookouts a large margin that the Vols fell one short of equaling and were dowmed 8-7. Colored Furniture Is i\ow tlie Vogue _ The present tendency in modern decoration requires the useofcolor ful furniture throughout the house —even to the floors. A tabourette and magazine rack in Chinese Red; an occasional table in Delph; a smoking stand in Jafle Green may prove just the added color your liv ing-room needs to make it fashion ably correct and comfortable. Use FLEX—the new color finish for the home—and you'll be sur prised how well you can do the work yourself, even without any exper ience. It doesn't require experience or skill to paint with FLEX, any one can apply it successfully the very first time. It can be brushed thi* way and that way without showing a single lap or brush-mark, yet it dries veiy quickly before dust can settle on its finish and mar its lustrous sheen. Twenty colors, are provided in the FLEX color line. Your own dealer probably has them all. Other combinations and tints can be pro duced simply by mixing two or more colors of FLEX to produce the exact variation or shade you wish. The wearability of FLEX is an other of its many virtues. It forms a surface so tough that the hardest wear makes but little impression on it. FLEX is a real find for the i housewife.
