Edinburg Society, RANKIN*THOMES "RITES ARE SOLEMNIZED The Frist Methodist Church was the scene of a very pretty wedding at ten o'clock Tuesday morning, when Miss Elva Thornes became the bride of Rev. Harry Rankin, of Galveston, the ring ceremony be ing performed by Rev. Z. V. Liles, and witnessed by a large number of people. The church was a beautiful de corated with flowers, roses predom inating, and the bride carried a shower bouquet of lilies of the Valley and white carnations, and the bride’s maid a bouquet of radiance roses. The bride was dressed in a beau tiful costume of white. Misses Eva Ruth Galloway and Mary Foster acted as junior bride’s maids, while Miss Katherine Galloway was bride’s maid and Jack Brady best man. There were also a pillow bearer, ring bearer and matron of honor. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Thornes of Edinburg and came here three years ago from her native home in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. • • • CHURCH WOMEN HONOR MISS ELVA THOMES The Women's Missionary Society of the Methodist church gave a “pirate” party this week in honor of Miss Elva Thornes, one of the first of Edinburg's June brides, and who has been a teacher in the junior department of the Sunday School. The church parlors were attrac tively decorated ir. green and yel low. and an artificial “island” was artistically created at the far end of the rooms, upon which the honoree was held captive by a band of pirates, who returned after a foraging expedition with a treasure chest filled with beautiful and ap propriate gifts for the bride-to-be. The guest book was presided over by Mrs. S. W. Patrick, and each person registered as he entered. The members of the Junior class impersonated the “pirates,” and a pleasing musical program was rendered, with Mrs. J. M. Frisby and Geneva Thell Everitt giving piano numbers, and vocal selections sung by Ann Kathryn Edwards and Esther Sterling. Those superintending the arrange ments and participating in the 1 hostess duties were Mesdames W. P Smith. J. H. Darbv, L. M. Bair, C. S. Collier. E S. Doughtie. E. M. Everitt and S. W. Patrick. There were about fifty people present. Afternoon Party Another of the pre-nuptial affairs honoring Miss Thornes was the afternoon party given by Miss Catherine Galloway and Mrs. I Gladys Trapp at the Phares home. A large number of the honoree's friends were present and showered her with beautiful and useful gifts. Golden daisies were used in the floral scheme and were employed in every possible manner in all the table appointments and about the rooms. A musical program wras rendered, with Mrs. J. M. Frisby. Miss Ann Katherine Edwards, and Mrs. Chas Sterling and Mrs. L. M. Bair contributors. About fifty guests were present at the refreshment table. W’hlch was centered by a single large daisy, petals of which radiated to every plate. SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS GIVES TARTY The girls of the Primary Class of the Presbyterian Sunday School entertained the boys of the class with a party at the annex Tues day. The boys recently were de clared the winners in an attand ance contest held by the class and the party was given in honor of their achievement. Games were played during the social hour and a delightful repast enjoyed. Mrs. Cooper P. Smith, teacher of the class, assisted the girls in the arrangements. Those attending were: Misses Catherine Cockrell, Evelyn Hiber, Mary Flanagan, Margaret Aderhold, Colleen Harper, Nancy Ra* Whar ton, Minnie Lou Cockrell, and Thomas Gasberg, Blucher Smith, Carol Lyons, Joe Bader, James Mc Clellan and John Epperson. i « » MISS EMMA RUSSELL 1IONOREE AT AFFAIR Miss Thelma Bullard entertain ed Saturday evening at a midnight matinee and Slumber party honor of Miss Emma Russell, who left Monday evening for her home in San Antonio. After the theatre the guests went to the Bullard home, where refreshments were served. The dining table was beautifully decorated with a centerprice of roses. The guests were served with a delicious two course breakfast in the morning. The group then took a number of kodak pictures and repaired in a body to Sunday School. Those attending the affair were Misses Gertrude Evans, Gladys Irwin, Leta Molthen, Leona Wat kins, Juanita Welch. Eggers was hostess to members of the Blue Bonnet Bridge club Friday afternoon at Crystal Waters, with three tables of .players present. Green and white were used as a color scheme. Mrs. W. M. Doughty. Sr., scored high at the games and Mrs. G. A. Barman made the no-trump. Those present were: Mesdames Roy Klossner, Emmet Hill, G. A. Barnum. J. M. Doughtie was hostess to the Swastika Bridge club Friday afternoon. The two-table club pernonnel was increased by the ac ceptance of four new members, Mesdames H. W. Griffith. H. C. Aderhold, A. L. Cramer and H. J. Tanner. Zinnias of various hues were used in the decorative scheme, and table accessories and tallies matched in tone. There was a large attendance at the luncheon. • • • BRIDESMAID HONORS BRIDE'TO'BE Miss Mary Foster, one of the junior bridesmaids serving at the wedding of Miss Elva Thornes Tues day morning, honored the bride-to be with a kitchen shower held at the Foster home Friday evening. The guests were chosen from the music classes of Miss Thornes, taught by her during the past school year. Pink verbenas and sweetheart roses were used in the decoration of the rooms, and a light repast was served during the even ing. The gifts were presented to the honoree by Eva Ruth Galloway and Miss Foster. Mrs. G. B. Foster as sisted the young hostess in her du ties. Liles in charge, at the Methodist church. Rev. Judd B. Holt, of the Baptist church, con ducted the opening exercises and was in charge of registration. Mrs. B. W. Rutherford is super intendent of the junior department, and the instructors of this depart ment are Mrs. Sharpe, Mrs. New man, Mrs. Bowles, Mrs. Turner and Miss Betsie Collier. Mrs. O. C. Brock is in charge of the primary department and instructors are Mes dames White. Elgies and Smith. The beginners department is in charge of Mrs. Chris Floyd and in structors are Mattie Bell Ross, Evan Sam Turner and June Schoenfeld.
