Since she wrenched her back early in the spring, the First Lady has been confined to the White Hcuse almost entirely, except for brief automobile rides, and the j President's parties on the week-end trips to the lodge have been com posed only of men. Pruitt to Die In Chair—Stay Denied AUSTIN, June 5—UPt— William (Dagger) Pruitt of Dallas, convict ed of the murder of William Mann, high school boy. is to die in the electric chair at Huntsville peni-, tentiary tomorrow. Governor Dan Moody refused yesterday to grant a reprieve or commute the sentence in the face of a recommendation from the board of pardons that he give Pruitt a' respite of 30 days. Northern Chinese Forces on Advance SHANGHAI. June 5—(/Pi—Foreign r.aval dispatches tonight from Tsingtao and Chefoo, Shantung province, said the northern allied forces had crossed the Yellow river about 60 miles east of Tsinan, pro vincial capital, broken the nation al .«t troops’ lines, and reached the Tsir.an-Tsmgtao railway line. S. Commissioners Without Juries WASHINGTON, June 5—'S')— The key piece of legislation In the Hoover law enforcement commis sions program for increasing the effectiveness of the prohibition sta tutes today bore the approval of the house and awaited the action of the senate. This was the much disputed meas ure to permit United States com missioners to handle minor viola tions of the dry laws without a jury. It was passed by the house late yes terday after a heated debate. Three other measures connected with it were approved by the house on Tuesday. This group, by amending the Jones law and the United States code would define and fix maximum pen alties for misdemeanors and author ize an accused person to waive his constitutional right to trial by jury. These, too, aroused a bitter contro versy. The fourth bill was attacked by i the w'Ct bloc and by some dry mem ! bers as unconstitutional and involv , ing an undesirable change in ju dicial procedure. They attempted I to send it back to conference, but 1 failed bv a vote of 225 to 157.
