A Few Cents Will Bring Many Dollars. Put Your For Rent Ad Belffl MOVIE SIDELIGHTS j DITTMANN I Half real and half legendary Is ew* central character around which i "The Bad Man," Porter Emerson Browne’s play, was written. Pancho Lopez, the whimsical, wit ty, bandit philosopher of this story is as much a legendary type in Mex ico and California as Robin Hood was in England. Needless to say, there has never been a bandit exactly like Panchc Lopez, any more than there was a robber born with the qualities and character of Robin Hood. Yet there is much of trufu in the picture. The bandit chiefs of early California, gay, carefree, ardent lovers and ferocious killers, al had this streak in them, and the same is true of many outlaws In the old days along the Mexican border, and, to a certain extent, even more recently in Mexico. Pancho Lopez, played in this First National Vitaphone production by Walter Huston, is a bandit and a killer, who takes what he wants with a laugh, whether it be money or cattle, or women. His philosophy of life is to be happy while he lives, and to satisfy every persona’ desire, and not to care when or how- he dies. He Is the born leader, stern with his owm men. loyal tr his friends, hating injustt*e in others, the bandit who robs the rich and gives to the poor. QUEEN When Marjorie White, featured in ‘ The New Movietone Follies of 1930,” now showing at the Queen theater, scored a sensational hit in her first picture. “Sunny Side Up,” many were the skeptical critic* who regarded her merely as a “flash in the pan." "She did it once, but can she do it again?” was their attitude. Fox Movietone executives, who have Miss White under long-term contract, thought »o. To convince the critics they put her in the hardest spot ever occupied by any young actress. She was given the leading feminine role *in ‘Happy Days,” spectacular muaical produc tion which presented virtually ev ery star on the Fox lot. To survive such competition was a severe test But Marjori:. not only survived, but outshone everyone else In the pic ture for her individual excellence. Next. Miss White was given the ! comedienne role in “The Golden Calf.” and with El Brendel, again proceeded to romp away with the major honors. Again teamed W’lth the famous Swedish character comedian in this year's “Movietone Follies” and In a role made to order for her. sir demonstrates beyond a doubt that she is the greatest comedy discov- ! ery since the advent of audible ! pictures. Others in the cast include Frank ! Richardson, Noel Francis. William C> ier. Jr., Miriam Seesar, J. M Kerrigan. Yola D'Avril, Huntly Gordon. Paul Nicholson ~nd many other well known players. In addi tion there is a dancing chorus cf 300 beauties and a vocal chorus of 50 trained singers. Benjamin Stol- j eff directed the production from the story of William K. Wells.
