I* Candlelight Ceremony To Be Sunday The Circle of Light ceremony of the Brownsville Girl Reserves will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 at the First Methodist church. The program as announced Saturday follows: Organ Prelude; Invocation; hymn, •True Hearted, Whole Hearted' ; solo, Mrs. r. K. Wilder- \ muth; sermon. Rev. Sterling Fish er; Candle Lighting ceremony ana benediction. Miss Harriet Kowalski, presi dent of the Girl Reserves organi zation. assisted by her cabinet of ten girls, together with over 30 old members, leads in the lighting j service. Approximately 20 girls are to take part signifying that they, too, wish to "follow the gleam.” In this dedication cere mony. the new followers Join with those who have marked In the past in their efforts to make a truer group of girls for the fu ture. Initiation Held Friday. initiation ceremonies wer held at the school for the new members-elect. Funny sights were seen as girls appeared with their dresses on backward, long stockings on their arms, a mans shoe on one foot arr* a girl's high-heeled shoe on the other, only ne stock strips of cloth, ending In large bws. During the morning the girls were compelled to appear with birilliani makeup on one cheek and the up per lip and in the afternoon make up placed on the opposite check and lower lip. Each new member carried a cushion and also a tooth brush which was tied to a string and hung around the neck. Al though the girls could not explain the reason for the unnatural at tire, the remainder of the student body understood. The girls suffered ridicule at the hands of teasing boys, their plaits were pulled, cushions snatched, and the toothbrushes ‘ugged, but ■ the girls always came through with a smile. • • • Committees Named For WardP-T.A. Mrs. Ella Brown read an abbreviated edi tion of the Children’s Charter as pledged at the White House Confer ence on Child Health and Protec tion. The book of the month was given to Mrs. Holcombe's room for having the most mothers present. A Hal loween party was planned for Oct. 28. Okla.. is the guest in Brownsville of her aunt, Mrs. J. L. MacDonald. Miss Boles, other than being a talented dancer, was Miss Tulsa of 1930 and Miss Oklahoma in 1931, She was chosen for the latter out of over 4.000 entrants. Mias Boles will be here for several weeks. Valley Federation Beard Meets In Harlingen Soon The regular semi-annual meet ing of the executive boarcu, of the R.o Grande Valley Federation of Women's clubs convenes at the Woman's building in Harlingen. Tuesday. Oct. 18 at 1:30 p. m. Rou tine business will be transacted and a program for the regular semi annual meeting of the federation Dec. 13 in San Benito will be ar ranged. Announcement is matte that a large number of club wo men from the Valley Is expected Self Culture Club Program Is Interesting The Self Culture club was en tertained Wednesday afternoon in the home of Mrs. H. L. Fitch and v program commemorating the bi centennial of Washington’s birth day was presented with Mrs. Charles Watson, president of the club, as leader. Guests sang “America” as the opening selection following which Mrs. Milton West played “Father af the Land We Love.” Mrs. Wat son gave a most interesting sketch dn “Washington, the Man". Mrs George Hamilton read a poem by Alfred Noyse entitled “Washing ton's Last Birthday.” Mrs. West played “Washington March and "Beneath a Weeping Willow’s Shade” by Philip Philes The poem and latter song were both dedi cated to Washington by the writ ers. Mrs. Volney Taylor read the constitution and by-laws of the club. Corona in pretty shades of pink adorned the living room where 15 members were entertained. A color scheme of pink and white was carried out in the use of corona vine and the table appointments. Two tables of play ers were present. Mrs. Ora Cald well and Mrs. Joe Ingram were presented trophies for success in the games. A dainty salad course was served. In two weeks the club will meet with Mrs. Ingram. * * * FRIDAY CLUB Mrs. Morris Clint was hostess to her Friday bridge club. Two tables of players were present. The fa vors were Hallowe’en horns, Inside of which a note was found reveal ing the secret. Table prizes cf bath powder were given and a lovely token was pre sented the bride-elect. Oct. 15. — The nuptial rites of Miss Alfrieda Hll linger. daughter of Dr. and Mrs. E Hillinger. and Paul H. Meyer, son of H. W. Meyer, were solemn ized Thursday evening at St. John's [Lutheran church. Rev. H. L. Wie deranders reading the impressive ceremony. The young couple pledged their vows before an altar where a palm arch was outlined against which were silhouetted tall floor baskets of yellow and pink reses inter mingled with fern. The pews set aside for the family and close friends were designated by clusters of corona tied with tulle. The Lohengrin Wedding March was played by Mrs. H. L. Wieder ander-3. The couple was attended by Miss Emma Meyer and W. W. Niederhaus. The bride wore an exquisite cos tume of lustrous Ivory satin in fit ted style with a yoke effect of lace. The long skirt of slender lines flared In the back to form a tram. Her veil of illusion was ad justed madonna fashion with a bandeau of orange blossoms. She carried a bridal bouquet of pink and white baby roses and tube roses with a shower of fragile blossoms cascading the length of her skirt. Miss Meyer was gowned in a long tea rose taffeta gown. Immediately after the ceremony, a reception was held at the Hil linger home where refreshments were served to the bridal party and guests. Mrs. and Mrs. Meyer left for a short wedding trip and will return to make their home on the San Brnito-Harlingen highway. Matamoros Couple Wed On Friday The marriage of Mias Sara Ca macho Hernandez to Ernesto Her nandez was solemnized Friday at nine o'clock, in the Our Lady of Refugio church in Matamoros. The civil ceremony was perform ed at the home of Gen. Julio Her nandez Serrano, commander of the Matamoros garrison, numerous friends attending. Attendants to the couple were: Mr. and Mrs. Noe Garza, Mr. and Mrs Rafael Mungia. Mr. and Mrs. A. Wayne W:od, Dr. and Mrs. Roberto Perez. Mr. and Mra. Francisco Gonzalez and Mr. Ruben Martinez. After the beautiful churth cere mony, the couple and their friends were entertained at a bridal supper at the Matamoros cafe. The couple crossed later to Brownsville bound for San Anto nio. where they will remain several days and then continue to Mexico City on their honeymoon trip. Mrs. Ernesto Hernandez is a niece of Gen. Herbert Reed, director of the choir in the First Baptist church and who has a studio In the church building, played several piano selections. Members of the choir led in singing "Blest Be the Tide That Binds'* following which the pastor led tn prayer of thanks giving to God. As the guests de parted. they wished Dr Smith "many happy returns of the day.” Dr. Smith closes three years of ministry here with the First Bap tist church with the close of this month. • • • Y. \V. Clubs Open Fall Work This Week A busy week looms ahead for Brownsville society, foremoas among the events on the calendar being the style show in the V. W. W arena Wednesday evening at 8 p. m and sponsored by the Brownsville Federation of Womens clubs for the benefit of the club house in this city. Practically ail arrangements have been completed, it was an nounced Saturday by Mrs. Maur* ice Tipton. Local Models In addition to the style show, in which local models will display me newest dresses, coats and nais ottered uy Brownsville merchants, song and dance numbers will be rendered by Booby Burns and pu pils, Joe Crixell and students, Joe Ingram, Jr , Sophie Kowalski and others.
