Social Calendar Filled With Activities As Christmas Day Approaches Civic League Xmas Party Is Pretty Event A distinctive event of Thursday I afternoon was the Civic League Christmas party given in the First j Methodist church with Mrs. W. W. j Ball as hostess, assisted by of ficers of the League. In the re ceiving line with Mrs. Ball wexe Mesdames J. K. Bull. D. P. Gay, i Jr., W. L. Ryman, F. E. Morris, C. j W. Watson, W. J. Vertrees and Willie A. George. Large palm leaves were an at tractive background for' the tall floor baskets filled with red turk's cap, pomsettias and fern, artisti cally arranged to emphasize the holiday note in the church parlors given over to the hospital.ty. The program, one of the most delightful ever presented, included a vocal rendition of "The Holy City” by Mrs. Frank P. Jackson with a violin obligato by Jose Alonzo of Matamoros and piano accompaniment by Paul Kennard, ‘•Medr.ation.” violin selection by Mr. Alonzo. Mr. Kennard playing the accompaniment; an encore by them and a vocal number, "Beth lehem Shepherds” by Mias Kate Failor, Miss Josephine Pierce play ing the piano arrangement. A contest in which the guests were requested to forip words out o? “Christmas Party" resulted • hi f.rst prize going to Mrs. Lee Vance The tea table was exquisitely appointed in a red and green color note, gained by the lace cover laid over a red cloth, the red tapers in green holders, colored mints and cookies iced in the holiday colors Miss Nannie Bourne and Mrs Della Bollinger presided at the tea and coffee services. Gifts were distributed from a brilliantly decorated tree which wi' also part of the Yuletiue motif. About 25 attended. Charity Home Plans Christmas Dinner, Ask For Donations The Charity Home under the management of Miss Lydia Cham pion is prewiring for the custom ary Christmas dinner and tickets are being issued to accomodate 1000. Anyone may obtain a ticket by calling at the home. Her talk was supplemented with items of interest from Mrs Nathan Moore who also attended the one day meeting. Mrs. Taylor told members at highlights con cerning a state federation conven tion, the arcount being added, to by several interesting points brought out by Mrs. Robert Browning, her guest from Houston. A great deal of amusement was afforded In this contest and also in the debate on “Whether or not Brownsville Study club women should wear silk or knit-cotton underwear.” Mrs R. M Warren and Mrs. J. R Snoeberger were for the silk and Mrs. Svn Lockwood and Mrs. Richard Bates for the cotton. The latter were ad judged the winners.
