NEW YORK. Dec. 23. Pie
holiday dullness characterized the i
curb market today.
Trading favorites made some
showing of firmness at and just
after the opening, but the response
was feeble and some shading of
values developed.
Electric Bond Ac Share turned
over with a fair degree of briskness,
trading at some concession from
Thursday's close, Small losses in
Commonwealth Edison. American
Superpower. American Gas and a
few others reflected the apathy of
buyers, selling in none of these as
sumed any volume.
The oil division was dormant, nor
could traders arouse life in the
specialties and industrials. Alumi
num of America rallied about a
point on early short covering and
held fairly steady, but a small
amount of stock was involved.
Deere dipped to a new low for the
current movement and Newmont
Mining was off slightly.
NEW ORLEANS COTTON
NEW ORLEANS. Dec. 23 /P»—
Cctton opened fairly active and
higher today, despite the fact that
Liverpool came in only about •’S due

notices totaling 7.600 bales here and
30.000 in the northern market, tha:
month opened only one point up
whereas later deliveries showed ini
tial gains of 4 to 6 points.
Reports said that all notices were
being promptly stopped and the
market continued to improve ?. cr
the start. January advancing to 5.71.
or six points above the previous
close March traded up to 5.86 and
May to 5.76. or 5 to 7 points above
the close of yesterday.
This advance attracted consider
able pro-holidav liquidation as well
as some hedge-selling and March
eased to 5 81 and May to 5 93. down
4 to 5 points from the early highs
but still one to two points above
yesterday s close.
Towards the end of the first hour,
the market was quieter but steady
and a point above the lows.

Timber wolves, in large packs in
search of food made scarce by the
early winter are on trail of hu
mans in the north country.
Barney Goodman, a trapper,
said he was mushing over Simon
House Lake, near Cranberry
Portage. Man., when a pack of 15
wolves picked up his trail and sdon
were in how ling pursuit as he and
his sledge dogs fled over miles of
frozen lake.
Finally the dogs jumped a strip
of water caused bv an ice crack.
Afraid of the open water, the
wolves circled It. and by the tln\e
they made the detour Goodman
and his dogs were safely in the
cabin.
Until dawn, the wolves howled
outside, circling a path in the deen
snow about the building. The
pack fled at daylight when the
trapper fired several shots.

Chicago wheat futures underwent

vance and subsequently held near
the initial range.
