I kx i n eagerly to question * '"t officer. i “At high tide last flight,” the officer explained. I “Hewson. returning with the ten o’clock boat, noticed the moonlight glittering upon the knife. He investi gated and found the incoming tide had jammed the body right up under a crossbeam amongst the piles." The knife to which the Inspector referred possess ed a long, curved blade. The dead man still clutched the hilt of the weapon. But his hand had been twist ed under his body so that I had to turn him over to see it. The knife was of a kind with which I had been ter ribly familiar in the past. “You see the mark. Petne?" snapped Smith. 1 nodded. The dead man upon the table was a Bur mese dacoit, one of Fu Manchu's henchmen.
