f Brownsville Is Honor Guest The following from the Thurs day San Antonio Express is of in terest: Mrs. Volney Taylor of Browns ville, first vice president of the Texas Federation of Women’s clubs and a candidate for president in the November election, was honor guest Thursday at a luncheon giv en in Artists’ Inn by the City Fed eration of Women’s Clubs, Mrs Preston Dial, president. Assisting hostesses were presidents of all local clubs. During a meeting of the Fifth District board prior to the lunch eon, John Carrington addressed the group, explaining the organization of the Texas Centennial Guild. Mrs A J. K. Beretta made a motion in ^ dorsing this plan. Mrs. Alex Adams, Fifth District president, told of the International Congress of Women held in Chicago recently. Mrs. J. E. King spoke on “Prison Work in Texas”; Mrs. W. E. Pyne on “NRA”J and Mrs. J. S. Peter on “Co-operation with War Veterans”. Mrs. W. H. Barker, chairman of literature for the Fifth District, discussed “Literary Contests.” An address on “Park Beautification” was given by Mrs. Marcus Clark, chairman of district parks, after which Mrs. James B. Cunningham, chairman of American and Mex ican arts and crafts, discussed “Pot tery”. Mrs. Frank Sorell spoke on “Highways”. Pictures of a proposed monument to Texas heroes, to be erected n the Alamo park, were shown by Mrs. Stephen F. Austin. Mrs. A. M. Patterson of Devine spoke on “American and Texas Music,” after which Mrs. Randall discussed “Scholarship Fund”. Mrs. Alex Adams presided during the board meeting. Mrs. Henry Red mond of Corpus Christi gave the invocation. Principal speakers for the luncheon period were Mayor C. K. Quin, County Judge Frost Wood hull and Mrs. Taylor. A brief ad dress on “Adult Education” was giv en by Miss Pearl Neas of South western University, Georgetown. Mrs. Pyne discussed the City Fed eration magazine, “Home and Club," and Mrs. John W. Legate urged all club members to subscribe to both state and national Federation pa pers. Bright colored zinnies were used to decorate the long table. Bride Elect Named Honoree of Party SAN BENITO, Aug. 25.—Miss Hunter, bride-elect of Nor lB Maley, was named honoree at a shower given by Mrs. E. Buesing, Tuesday. A color scheme of pink and green was noted in the appointments and decorations. Bunco furnished diversion for the evening. Mrs. Lyle Bassett winning high score and Mrs. A. V. Maley winning low. Both presented thhr prizes to the hon oree. Little Bobbie Witt drew the gifts into the room in a pink wagon and presented them to Miss Hun ter. Harlingen Bride-Elect Is Honored (Special to The Herald) HARLINGEN, Aug. 25. — Miss Jane Woodward, bride-elect of A. H. Goldammer, Jr., was named hon oree of a bridge party and shower Wedwnesday by Miss Frankie Mae McLeod and Mrs. William Holloway. A rainbow color scheme was em phasized in the arrangement of roses and fern in the reception room. Miss Florence Purdy was recipient of high score prize and presented it to the honoree who also received many other gifts after a clever ceremony had placed her on the sofa between her mother Mrs. J. L. Woodward and Mrs. A. H. Goldam mer. Dainty corsages of sweetheart roses were plate favors, the chosen theme being expressed in the re freshment services and the ice water each glass colored a different hue also reflected the rainbow idea. Guests were Misses Florence Purdy, Hazel Haire, Bonnie Bell Bryant, Virginia Thomas, Evelyn Sparks, Blanche Patton, Essie Mc Leod, Alice Harrymen, Mesdames Tom Wynn, Arthur' Purdy, A. L. The young cfluple was ac companied by Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Jackson and Misses Hazel and Ruby Doris Jackson. They will make their home on the groom’s farm wfst of town The bride’s home was in Santa Anna from where she came to visit her sister, Mrs. Jackson several weeks ago and during her stay has made a host of friends among the younger set. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Brokelt and son of Paris, Texas, were calling on Mr. and Mrs. Lee Clements Tues day. Betty Jr. and Sonny Bourne of Santa Rosa spent Tuesday here with relatives. Roy Edward and Karl Duddlesten of Raymondville were callers here Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hale and daughter Iris has returned from a trip to north Texas and Oklahoma. They were accompanied home by Mr. Hale’s parents who will visit here indefinitely. James Ransome spent the week end in San Benito with his sister Mrs. R. Klemann. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sprouse and son Arthur of San Perlita were all day guests at the home of their daughter Mrs. Marshal Bourne and Mr. Bourne Sunday. Mrs. Alice Wilson and daughter Mrs. Perry Lokey of Kingsville spent the week end here with rel atives. Mrs. Lawrence Burns and daugh ter Madeen of Lyford and house guest Miss Elizabeth Armstead of Chicago were callers here Monday. ‘Home Rule’ Plan Hit by Kowalski An appeal to vote against the proposed ‘ Home Rule” amendment to the state constitution has been issued by Fred Kowalski as pres ident of the Roosevelt-Gamer club. This amendment would allow counties with populations over 62, 000 to reform their county govern ments with the power concentrated in the commissioners court. Kowalski is of the opinion that this strong concentration of power in one small group is undemocra tic and likely to produce evil con ditions. Under the proposed “home rule” the commissioners would be able to appoint practically all office hold ers in the county. The largest mass of copper ore on record was found in a Minne sota mine in 1857; it measured 45 feet in length 22 feet at its greatest width and more than eight feet in its thickest part, weighed 420 tons and contained over 90 per cent of pure copper. Two Honorees Of Farewell Compliment Melba and John Howard, who with their parents, Rev. and Mrs. H. J. Howard will leave soon for Wichita, Kans., where Rev. Howard will take Up work with the Lawrence Avenue Christian church Sept. 17, were named honorees of a surprise farewell party Thursday evening at the W. E. Adams home, 308 Levee street, given by the Senior Christian Endeavor Society. Diversion for the evening was pro vided in various flames after which, dainty sandwiches, cake and punch were served. Walk er, and the honorees. • • • Nuptial Rites Solemnized Miss Maria del Carmen Fernan dez of San Benito and Eugene Cuel lar, Jr., were married in a simple ceremony Wednesday night at the home of the groom’s mother on 1055 Taylor street with Bertram Combe, justice of peace, officiating. The bride wore a white sport dress with white accessories. Only the members of the groom’s family. Mr. and Mrs. George A. Covacevich, Miss Rosita Castillo, Dr. J. A. Castillo and Mrs. Combe were present. The ceremony was performed in the living room which was prettily decorated with roses and fern. After the ceremony, an informal reception was held. Wedding cake topped by a miniature bride and groom, was cut and served with ice cream. Mr. and Mrs. Cuellar have left on a short honeymoon trip and will make their home in Brownsville up on their return. Mr. Cuellar is em ployed by Covacevich Supply Co. Mrs. Cuellar is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Fernandez of San Benito and Mr. Cuellar is the son of the late Col. Miss Easter Albrecht left Wed nesday for Boulder, Colo., to spend her vacation. She will also attend the graduation of her sister, Miss Velma, from the University of Colorado. Mrs. J. J. Hunt of Klondike, is visiting her son, Nat Hatcher. Carl Vandervort and family have moved from Edcouch to Weslaco, and are occupying the home of Mrs. J. L. Willis. . Winston The marriage of Miss Martha Sleeth of Portland, Oreg., to Wil liam Winston, formerly of New York and now of Brownsville, was sol emnized Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Drayton with Bertram Combe, jus tice of peace, performing the cere mony. The couple was attended by Mr. and Mrs. Drayton. The wedding was a simple one, the bride wearing a modish frock of blue and white print with white accessories. Mrs. Winston arrived in Browns ville only a few days ago and Mr. Winston, who is pilot for the Pan American airways, has been in the city for two weeks, coming here from New York. The couple will probably make their home in Gua temala.
