(IP) -Ner- | vou» financial markets dipped and rallied spasmodL-ally today a& traders confusedly attempted to form some conclusion as to the government’s future monetary pro gram. Stocks received support aft er a sharp sell-off and. under the leadership of metal issue, climbed back to higher territory. The close wss steady to firm. Transfers ap proximated 900,000 shares. Equities started out in a dull and irregular fashion. Another drive started on American Telephone and •ome of the leaders. The telephone issue slumped to 115 1-4. but dis played resistance with other de-1 pressed shares, and soon came bsck t© around 120 for a net gain of about 2 1-2. U. 8. Smelting spurt ad some 7 points. Grains were soft for a while, but they rallied along with cotton and sane other com modities. Bonds were mixed. The dollar was a little easier in foreign exchange dealings. NEW ORLEANS COTTON NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 30. UP)— The cotton market opened steady bu rather quiet today. Liverpool cables came in about as due and sterling was a shade higher. First trades were unchanged to two points up and the market improved slightly after the start with Decem ber at 9.87 and March at 10.12. or 3 points above yesterday’s close. Later in the first hour prices eased off 2 to 3 points to 9.85 for December and 10.09 for March, un changed to one point up compared with yesterday's close. CHICAGO GRAIN CHICAGO. Sept. 30.
